Lately I have seen several Verney-Carron doubles for sale in gunshops or over the internet. I do not really know much about them, but the ones I handled seemed a little light for their caliber. How do they compare on quality with the other main DR brands like Heym, Merkel, Chapuis and the K-guns?

Considering half of AR seems to be chasing the lightest Double in any calibre,
especially the 450/400, that is a funny comment.

They make good guns from what I have seen.

For the last 4 years, I have been telling my friend, Ken at KEBCO that I would never own a "Frog gun". Well, never say never. I have many British and European doubles. I dearly love my Heyms. However, I purchased a .577 nitro Verney-Carron from Ken a few weeks back. At 26" and 14# 2ox. it is exactly what I would have ordered.

I am in the process of ordering from Ken a .500 nitro, 25" barrels, 12# even (and considered making it 12# 8oz.), with the options I want. I know this bucks the current A.R. trend of light for calibre guns. I respectfully disagree with this trend. If complete in time, Ken will be showing it, amongst others, at the early 2010 shows prior to my taking posession.

Point is, Ken can pretty much order you a bespoke gun at a very fair price.

I can't help you with advice on these rifles because I don't have the experiance.

What I can say is that if you choose to purchase one. Ken Bush of Kebco sells them, and he will take care of you. He's a straight shooter whom I've done buisness with in the past.

I can weigh in...so to speak. I have a 450/400 VC/Demas that I've had for just over a year and bloodied it on buff in Zambia last year. They are an excellent deal in the double market. Quite accurate and the fit and finish are first rate....as good as most anything out there in a modern double. I too bought my gun new from Ken....first rate gent that I would deal with again.
French or not, they're a very good firearm...you can't go wrong purchasing one.

I high-lighted the good words about Ken www.kebcollc.com and DEMAS made

V/C doubles because that's what I have always read about both, period.

In my opinion, they are the best affordable double out there. I purchased the first .600 from Kebco last year and have just used it in Tanzania on four buff with superb results. I find the rifle so well balanced and comfortable that I could easily fire 100 rounds through it in a go. That would be a little costly though.

I have a searcy .500 and .577 which I really like as well but I would say that the Verney-Carron feels to me like a better rifle. Just my opinion.
