Good Day Ladies and Gents: I have been spending the last month of Mondays trying to work up a load for my Merkel 141E. The gun was originaly regulated with the Norma 232 grain Vulcan. We don't have any of that here in Alberta so I picked the Speer HotCor 270 grain semi spitzer in .366 diameter and went to work. I tried a half a dozen diferent powders and finally came up with Varget powder at 53 grains. My range work was done at 50 metres using a scope set on 3 power. Now all I have to do is adjust the regulation screws on the barrels and I should be set. I think I am going bear hunting this weekend with the Merkel. I'll keep you posted. Kind regards, Carpediem No politician who supports gun control should recieve armed protection paid for by those he is trying to disarm. Keep me posted. I have one of the rifles and would like to see the results of your efforts. It doesn't look that you're too far away from perfection! JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous. | |||

Hello Judge: No worries. I can send you all of my load data and targets if you wish. However, I would say save yourself the time and try the load I am using. It seems the Varget powder worked the best. Specs are: Varget, 53.0 grains Speer HotCor bullet, 270 grains Norma cases WLR primer C.O.L., 3.665" Medium factory crimp using the Lee factory crimp die. Did you get the instruction sheet from Merkel on how the regulation screws are to be turned to move the left barrel? The hex screws use a 1.5 mm hex wrench. If you need more info, just ask. I've had mine for five years or so and have regulated several loads relatively successfully. I'm just curious as to how easy you find getting the two barrels to "merge". It looks like they do just fine separately, but I'd like to know how much time it takes you to get them jam up and jelly tight. It seems that some days it just takes a few tries (or even one adjustment) and others it is so darn frustrating that I just quit and try another day. I guess what I'm saying (or asking) is "Do you find the adjustments consistent with the instructions that one turn equals 'X' inches, etc." I think I finally figured out that you move only one axis at a time, not both horizontal and vertical.... and gradual increments seem better than, say, two inches at a once. Let me know your findings. I think the rifle is one of the best values out there. I've always gotten it to shoot a group of right/left of 2.5" at 100 yards (and sometimes much better) but it is like dealing with a beautiful woman... if you know what I mean.
