cal pappasAlaska Double Rifle Shoot--Pics from the shoot
Gents:
Just a reminder as time is getting close, about two months and two weeks until May 6.
Shooting starts at 10am and the range is reserved so no others will be with us. Lunch as at noon, and at 1 shooting will resume until shoulders are sore. At 4 is a get together in Anchorage at Paul A's house. He will hand out directions and a map at the shoot. BYOB and snacks to Paul's.
At the shoot we have a few out of state gents coming up and one confirmed from England. A gent from southern Arizona backed out shortly after Trump's talk of illegal roundups (this double rifle señor may be in the US illegally but I don't know that for a fact).
Rob will have his collection there, as will Ron and many others. Mike B. should be back from Ukraine and will join us. Dave P., Chuck M., Hank W., and many others will be there with their toys.
I will bring my .450, .500, .577 bpe, 12-10-8-4 bores, and nitro rifles in .350, .450-400, .450, .500, .600. Also I am currently trying to import a .577 Howdah but I don't know if it will be here in time enough for me to get brass and bullets and dies.
Remember, all are welcome. All of you AR fellas, if you have the miles and a free weekend, come on up. MAC, Mike, Larry, Ted, and the rest. Hell, even Shootaway is invited to perhaps give a seminar on appreciation of quality doubles and African hunting!
If you can make it, please PM me so I can plan on food. J&J Wojo will be the chefs this year and I will coordinate with the regulars what to bring so we have enough food (usually burgers and dogs) and soft drinks and water. I will do this in about a month.
Cheers, all.

BiebsCal, very gracious of you and the folks up there to host this event on a regular basis. It gives DR lovers the chance to shoot rifles they've only read and dreamed about. Good job!
21 February 2017, 05:56
cal pappasThat said, Jon, come on up. I can host you at my place to avoid hotel charges. A bit of fishing, too, if you wish. Bring your wife or girlfriend, or both! And, of course, a Blaser!

Omnivorous_BobCal, I just got another cardboard zebra, hippo, and rhino target this week for the shoot. I'll bring my 4, 10, 30-06, 25-20, maybe the 318 and 8 depending on brass, 577 howdah, and for variety's sake the single barrel Thompson SMG, Sten, and Delisle. I can't wait.
FYI, this is also the weekend of the Great Alaskan Aviation Expo, so you pilots can kill two birds on the same trip if you come on up.

C'mon, Larry. With today's technology, we can set up a screen at the range and do a skpe! You can shoot and watch the graduation between shots. And, to entice you further, I will put your bench right next to Shootaway's. How's that for a friend?!

Definately early May has worked for all of us. At the shoot I ask those in attendance if they would like a second shoot, usually late July or early August (beofre caribou and sheep season). We have a second shoot but very few folks come.

cal pappasGents:
Just had a confirmation from a fella in N.C. and he will attend the shoot with a .500 Merkel and a drilling.
Remember, you don't need to bring a rifle. Just show up! All are welcome.
That weekend the Alaska Gun Collector's gun show is in Palmer, about 20 miles north of the shoot. You gents who are staying over may want to attend the show. Whatever you do, plan on a get together in the city at 4pm of the 6th.
If any of you are fishermen, I live within a few miles of several streams. It will be too early for salmon, but steelhead will be in the rivers. The lakes will still be frozen over so no pike or lake trout, though. Bring your fishing gear (I don't have any as I don't fish)!
Saeed: you have an invitition, too!!
Two months and counting…

All is on scheule for the shoot--food is planned, RSVPs are in and should have a nice batch of doubles there, a few are joining us from the Lower 48 states and one gent from the UK is coming, an afternoon get together is planned at Paul A's house for that afternoon, and the AGCA gun show is that weekend in Palmer.
Anyone here is welcome and it's not too late to use your miles for a ticket. The locals will help with the details.

I think Biebs stayed away is he was a little taken back because the range has not installed the transgender restrooms yet. Maybe next year.

Here are some pics from the shoot. I would guess 50 showed up with 30+ at any given time on the range. Mike B. came over from Ukraine, Steve Harley flew over from the UK, several from the flatlands of the Lower 48, guests from Alaska, and (of course) the regulars. Lots of doubles, three 4-bores, some 8s, three howdah pistols, and a large selection of nitro, bpe, and bore rifles. No doubt the best shoot ever, great food, sunny day.
We all agreed our shoot will be held the first Saturday in May so no more waiting on, and voting, for, dates. Put the date in your book now and be there in 2018.
Cal
A couple of gents look over Cal's table. From the bottom up : 4-8-10-12 bore, .577 bpe, .450 bpe.
Every double shoot needs a Thompson. Courtesy of Rob.
Jonathan takes aim with Cal's 8-bore Walter Locke.
Chuck P. brought this .275 Rigby.
Doc M. shoots Cal's .350 no2 Rigby.
A nice .404 Jeffery bolt gun.
I forgot the caliber of this one. Sorry
I believe this is a .45-70.
Clarence from South Carolina visited us with his wife, Pam, and here he is taking a shot with Cal's .600.
Three Howdah's where there thanks to Hank, Rob, and Todd.
Ron W's table with a: .577 Army and Navy, .450 no2 Webley, .375 flanged, .450-400 NE hammer rifle, .577 light nitro and… (I forgot).
Mike B. came from the Ukraine to visit his old double pals and he's chatting with Ron W. (with headphones) about Ukrainian gun laws.
Rob S's table with a 4-bore single, 8-bore hammer rifle and a few more.
Cal's table showing (right to left) .350 no2 Rigby, .450-400 Harrison and Hussey, .450no2, .500, .600, .450 bpe, .577 bpe, 12-bore, 10-bore,8-bore, 4-bore.
I believe this is Chuck's .577 Cashmore.
P
Phil S. took a day off from chasing brown bears and bought a pair of Enfields.
Todd's table of Hollands is a sight to behold.
Over and unders were present, also.
Hank W. brought a .450 no2, the .577 howdah, and a bpe double.
This is it for my pics. Please post any that you have. The more the merrier.
I enjoyed you all, thanks for coming, and see you the first Saturday in May, 2018.

FrostbitHey Cal,
Before Mike Brooks corrects you it's Ukraine not "The" Ukraine. As he told Joyce, "You don't say "The Canada".

I always learn something useful at the double shoots. Surprised you didn't get an image of the very collectible Army Navy k-Mart split ring sling adapter.

Unfortunately folks, the best image of the day was missed on video but captured in real time in a few of our memories.
Cal is a very knowledgable and openly generous man when it comes to encouraging folks to shoot any and all of his fine vintage doubles. I have to think when he is having people shoot his 4-Bore it's a bit like Saeed and his T-Rex.
Now imagine a gentleman with state of the art orange foam plugs in his ears, seated with the loaded 4 Bore to his shoulder about to punch a one inch hole in a cardboard Rhino. I'm thinking, "Stand Man!! I'd never shoot that gun seated!!"
He touched off the trigger and simultaneously the muzzle raised, his head jerks back while still attached to his shoulder, then ten feet through the air comes an orange foam ear plug directly at me.

You had to see it to believe it. For every action there is obviously an opposite and equal reaction.
Cheers
Jim

Sorry to say we have none Cal.
Saw lots of folks with smart phones taking pictures though. Perhaps some other AR folks have some to share.

nopride2I had been following the double rifle shoot for years on the forum. Decided to go this year. Had a great time and met a bunch of really good folks. Jim and Joyce (Frostbit) put me up for a couple of days. They were wonderful hosts. Took me to a world class restaurant. I'm definitely going next year and looking forward to a meal at Jen's.
