Gonna post in reloading too but I know a few of you have 450/400 NE's. I have a RCBS rockchucker and need the RCBS shell holder for my 450/400. Both gun shops I called say they cannot find on RCBS' chart, a listing for the 450/400 and they cannot order me a shell holder without the number. What shell holder # are people using?

Hornady #25 (Hornady shellholders work fine in RCBS presses and primers)

RCBS special order P/N 579-525 - MidwayUSA has them

Doc is correct. In the future, you may want to call Huntington's @ 530-534-1210. Great folks. They will steer you in the right direction.

Thanks guys. I noticed that the Hornady #25 states for the 348 winchester. That correlates to the RCBS #5 - 348 winchester. Just an observation - guess I'm wondering if they are interchangeable.

I answered elsewhere but yes it is for the 348 Win and the 500 Linebaugh which is where mine came from.

The RCBS #31 works great for the 450/400 3"

+1 on the RCBS 31 for the 450/400. Works fine, and can find them anywhere for $5-7. Have several if you can't find one.

Just in the last couple of days I looked at the Hornady site and it said shell holder #54. I ordered one. Hope I didn't mis-read???

Just re-checked and, of course, CCMDoc is correct. It is Hornady #25, equivalents are Lee #8, or RCBS #5.

The 450/400 3-1/4 and the 450/400 3" use different shell holders.

The store had a RCBS #31 in stock and it works just fine. Thanks for all the help and input guys.

Somebody please edjamakate me on reloading this round. Specifically, I thought I read somewhere you can reload with pistol bullets for plinking/practice/etc.

Yes, no, maybe?? I just want to make sure I choose the right calibre to put on my firarms certificate that gives me the most versitility. Here, you have to choose the calibre before you get to buy the gun :-(

I have a lot of fun shooting the .41 Mag 210 gr. Hornady pistol bullet over 28gr. of Trail Boss powder in my .450/.400 - 3". Very accurate in my Ruger No.1 and as a bonus it has the same POI as my 400gr. Woodleigh full tilt loads.

I posted a range report last September on the Single Shot forum - sorry don't know how to live link but a search should bring it up.

I've also stated this before, but I've had great success using the hornady .41 pistol bullets in both my Searcy and my Ruger. Same goes for the .300 gr Hornady bullet for the .405 Win round. I use 50 gr of AA5744 for both bullets. The .41 mag bullets are cheap, fun, deadly (on pigs, deer and rabbits) and the recoil is nil.
