I just returned from an interesting alternative to Africa - a hunt in the Australian Armen Land. It is perfect for double rifle hunting. Probably a lot of you already knew that - I am usually a little slow to catch on.

I posted the story in Australian / New Zealand hunting forum. It is an opportunity to use the doubles they way they were meant to be used because you can stalk up close - real close as in 7 yards in one instance.

I made a major mistake in taking a 404 instead of my 450/400. I was thinking the shots would be long. They were just the opposite. Fortunately the PH rescued me by loaning me his Holland and Holland 500/465.

From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Oh, Allen:

So sad that the P.H. had such a pedestrian "loaner". Too bad he didn't have something really nice like a Baikal.

Judge,

It was probably obvious that I have no class.

For someone like you or the rest of the DRSS they would have brought out the good stuff.

By the way I had to drink Oban and smoke Cubans. It was pretty rough.

Ain't them Cubans nice! That was a highlight of my safari in RSA in April. Glen Fiddich or Tanqueray and Cohibas every evening after supper. Park me in front of a good ironwood fire and keep the ice cubes coming.

It's the details that make the difference...

Why aren't you carrying with muzzles forward? Wink

A shame you had to settle for a H&H .500/ .465 loaner. Were you able to suffer through it? Big Grin

What's that brown stuff in the glass?

Just did a similar trip a few weeks back with my son, (4 buffalo and a scrub bull) and Palmer is correct it is a perfect area to try out a double rifle.

Dirklawyer, I hunted with Graham Williams and highly recommend him for double rifle shooters. He loves to get in close where that second shot might need to happen in a hurry.

His email and website address is in the Australia/New Zealand hunting forum report.

DoubleDon, That stuff was the measley Oban single malt that we bought in Darwin for only $100. Poor folks got poor ways.

That H and H shot like a dream. The only problem was that I was constantly afraid I might scratch it but in the end did not and it was a great fun to carry and shoot.

For those who have not looked into this the cost is less than an Africa trip and you can shoot as many buff as you want but all past the first one have a trophy fee.
