I recently swapped a rifle with Ken and ended up a Verney Carron .470 round body. The round bodies have always appealed to me aesthetically. The rifle has 26" barrels and looks as well as it handles. I thought I would share some pictures of the rifle. Very happy with the rifle.

For Jorge, day before yesterday I had the rifle at the range. Just for you I decided to shoot it at 50 yards. I am still tinkering with the load, but I am not seeing much variation between 86, 87 and 88 grains of RL15.

Good quality tool. Must say the round body is pleasing to the eye.

An absolutely beautiful rifle! The longer barrels will, I suspect, make it feel much lighter than it actually is, and the length in concert with the round body action gives it a sleek appearance. The engraving is very well done, and is reminiscent of the scroll on English rifles of old. That rifle, however, is not just a pretty face, as the grouping at 50 yds shows.

I agree, the round body is very pleasing to the eye....had I not stumbled over an old british double in .475 NE, wich I bought, I would seriously considered ordering a simliar rifle..

Things I like about this rifle in addition to the round body frame:

1. The darker wood.
2. The absence of game engraving, just scroll.
3. The 26" barrels.
4. The flip over night sight.
5. The absence of sight leaves for distances that are ridiculous.

Things I would change:

1. The beavertail forearm, replace with a splinter.
2. The recoil pad, replace with a red Silvers-like pad.

For an off-the-shelf rifle, very pleased with it overall.

I agree with all of your pros and cons Mike, with one exception! Guess which one!!

Eventually you will see the light on the longer barrels and emerge from the fog of confusion that currently muddles your thinking.

The way you get all these doubles to shoot, I think you need to consider starting the
Jine's Academy for the Disipline of the Double Rifle.

The key to good shooting = selective posting of targets.

As I noted, this was an off-the-rack rifle. Ken had the .470 in stock, and that is how I ended up with a .470. Plus I have a bunch of .470 brass and bullets begging to get used.

Of course that does not help me with my 450,470,500 problem

Lovely Rifle I like the way the round bodies feel in the hand and am quite enamoured with longer barrels. My Gibbs 450 have 28" barrels handles like a shotgun.

NitroNut I think you will find that all of the NE calibers between 450 and 475 will give you pretty much the same terminal effect a 480-500gr bullet traveling at 2150 for roughly 5000 lbs of energy. Your choice of caliber comes down to Ammo availability, whether you reload or not to what caliber just full fills your dreams. Jumping up to the 500 as mentioned in the many threads on AR will get you into another class of rifle.

NN, is this your first double? I would give strong consideration to the .450 3 1/4". Cool looking cartridge, long and lean. Lots of choices of bullets that are relatively inexpensive. Rifle is good for everything from plains game to elephant. Recoil is manageable for most folks. I think it would be hard to go wrong with any of the three calibers you have identified. Kudos for not going the .450/.400 route which I do not think is nearly as versatile as the .450 3 1/4".

No, this would not be my first. I have a V-C 577. I like to start at the top ( relatively speaking) and work my way down. As I see it, if I had only 1 it would be a 500NE, no questions asked.
As this is to be a lighter rifle to my 577 , I’m actually seriously thinking of the 450. I think a V-C round body with 26” barrels and splinter forend would be the ticket.
I reload and like the possibilities with .45 cal for a variety of bullets. Having said that the other (2) 470 and 500 have there good points as well. Living in Canada makes it harder
in that I don’t have an enabler like Ken around who can tempt me with new goodies on a regular basis I have to choose wisely , just because double around here move more slowly.

Mike : I like the 26" barrels, that is what I was going to order on my 450. Ken and Jerome suggested 24 so we settled on 25. That sure is a great target grouping there my friend!

I think you will be happy with your decision to go longer. It just makes the rifle balance better and look svelter. IMO.

Wonder of the rifle will male ME look svelter?

Seriously, I just like the lines of those old Brit Doubles like Zephyr's and his 450 is a 28"!

Very nice double Mike , I concur on the 26" tubes as well.
My VC 500 has them and just balances better than shorter tubed guns,
As well as looking more svelt. My 600 I ordered with Ken and Jerome in Reno
Will also have the 26" tubes, however I doubt that its going to look quite as svelt!
Great shooting at 50yds mate.

You should feel pretty secure Dutch44 in that they don't get much longer than the 475#2 other than the 450#2 at a case length of 3.5"

I like that feature as well, either a gold or white insert in the middle of the rear sight.

My Bradshaw double in 500 NE and 450/400 will have 27" barrels. The 24" barrels make the rifle feel like a sawed-off shotgun to me.
