Using the "standard" of 89 grain of RL 15 or 106 Grains of IMR 4831 my 470 NE tends to shoot at about 2000 FPS. I have tried two different lots of RL 15, two different chonographs (my current one is a CED M2), 4 different types of brass, and many different bullets. Results may change a little but not much. To reach 2150FPs I need about 93 grains of RL 15. I am not showing any pressure signs, brass falls out, etc. The rifle has 23.5" barrels and regulates well at 2125-2150. It is a Krieghoff. Do I have anything to worry about shooting 93 grains of RL 15 with a foam wad or shooting 108.5 grains of IMR 4831? Has anybody else experienced this same situation?

I wouldn't say so. You can get variations from batch to batch of powders. You also have the variables of what goes XXXX velocity in one gun is slower or faster in another gun. A couple of my DR's need more powder than the others to either regulate or give a required velocity. Hope that helps. .

I would think you are good to go DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

Mike, Your gun may have larger inside diameter than most. If you need the 2150 fps to regulate then just up the IMR 4831 charge until you get there. Some guns need more than the 106 grain load. As long as your gun opens easy and cases fall out I'd say you are good. Sam

You lucky dog. Of course, it is my batch of RL-15 but 85 to 87 grains of RL-15 gives me about 2200 fps, with the foam wad, North Fork solids, etc. Your chambers may be a lot looser than mine. The strange thing, and by design by Krieghoff is my suspicion, is that the velocity doesn't seem to affect the regulation and all that other "stuff". And I'm all for higher velocity rather than lower velocity. Not that I'll get the chance to whack a hundred elephants at 2000 fps and another hundred at 2200 fps to see if there is any difference but higher velocity can only help with penetration, etc. As to the pressure, in a vague and generalized way, the pressure is exponentially related to velocity, but kicking it up from 2000 fps to 2200 fps in a low pressure round like the 470 NE will not matter. Ignore the increase in recoil. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Mine is the same way. Lots of different bullets and velocities and they all shoot well, just some better than the others.

I get 2,150 right on the nose in my VC with 107.0gr IMR-4831, it has slightly less than 24" barrels. I wouldn't think bumping your load up a grain or two would hurt anything like as Will said they operate at pretty low pressure.
