The howdah pistols are the one firearm that if it could talk I’ve always thought could tell some real stories! Just think of trying to stop a 600 pound tiger come over the elephants head at four feet with a pistol!

I have a beautiful old nitro proofed Bland & Sons double in .577 3" (hammers, underlever). That pistol would look great on my belt next to it!

Very cool.
I think I prefer the grip on the top gun. Seems like it would roll in the hand a bit better.
With the craze of building double rifles on shotgun actions these days, why is nobody building BPE Howdah pistols on old shotgun actions?

Huvius , yes when I posted the photos , it looked like a pic of another one had popped in there !

GOB can tell us the story on that when he posts , I do believe one of them is for sale & I've been told it is in 28Bore ?

I'm thinking maybe 24Bore as that would be 577 of some type ?

Because it is illegal to build a pistol on a shotgun action! Though a rifle can have a 16 inch barrel, if factory made, but it has to have 18 inches minimum barrel length and 26 inches over all length if built on a shotgun action.

The problem is BATF will rule it is a short barreled pistol. The frame was built and sold as a shotgun it will always be one in the eyes of BATF. We had some people making bolt action 22cal pistols based on old 22 rifle actions. They nearly went to jail for making rifles with less than legal length barrels.

The ATF will classify it as a sawed off rifle, and that is illegal.

A smith with a handgun firearms manufacturing license, could build one from scratch as a pistol, and it would be legal. Of course this only applies to the USA as far as I know!
