...not really sure which one.

Here is the scenario.

I am getting where I can't see iron sights anymore so I am exploring for options.

I bought a Burris Fast-Fire II and put it on an AR just to see if I would like one on my double rifle.

Bought the Burris because it gets good reviews and is moderately priced for just experimental use.

Here is the dilemma and maybe I am in error and the reason for the post.

I set my FF to be dead on at 30 feet...across the room distance for close range self-defense.

But...what I have found is that with this 30' zero...it shoots too low at 10 feet to reliably kill a snake and at 50 yards...it is 12" high...not what I was looking for in a close range sight.

Have I done something wrong??? Or...is this just the inherent way the red-dot sight works.

Be blunt as I am ignorant of the system and want the facts.

How much higher is your FF line of sight above the axis of the bore? That is most likely the problem and will exist with any sight on an AR.
Should work fine on other guns.
Just my .02
Good luck with it

I just mounted one on a rifle barrel but haven't tried it yet. Not trying to be tacky but is the mount solid? Almost sounds like it's loose.

Sorry, should have added the 30 foot sight in range is equally the problem. Sight in at 75-100 yds and calculate the variance, will only be up or down a few inches out to 150 or so

The FF is high. 3" above the receiver. Will will the 100 yd Zero still help?

I have it on the rifle in addition to a scope for close range targets like snakes and skunks (2&4 legged). It is solidly mounted. Will post a pic.

If zeroed at 30 feet with a height above bore of 3 inches, you will only be on target at 30 feet. On a DR, it won't be that high, so you won't have the extreme angle effect that you have now. Same with iron sights. You won't zero at 30 feet and your sight won't be 3 inches high. You can visualize it by thinking about a triangle with your bore to sight distance as the short side and then project both the bore and sight to the target, and beyond.. You will see the divergence at other ranges. Zeroing at longer range will certainly help, but not for snakes.

So...don't give up on it for a double...as closer to the bore will help...but...on the AR as rigged...not going to work as I would like.

Correct?

Correct; not at 30 feet. Think about that triangle.

I am just surprised by 12" at 50. Will re-zero at 100 and then check snake distance. Snake and intruder is the main function I wanted the FF for. Scope for all other.

Anybody got any other mounting suggestions for the AR???

Ran a quick calc at Hornady sight. Will only do 25 yd increments. Ou can interpolate for intermediate ranges ,but this shows what is happening.

Muzzle 3 in low
25 yd. 1.9 in low
50 yd. 1 in low
75 yd. .4 in low
100 yd on target

Sighted at 30 feet you are sending the bullet up at a steep angle.
I think it will work great on your DR
Best

So for the AR...if I want the FF for very close ranges...that will be basically all it is good for.

Correct, and for close range man size targets it is VERY GOOD. Just way to high above the bore for snake shooting at your feet. It will be excellent on your double and a welcome relief for aging eyes!

Thanks all told me what I need to know!!!

I put one on my AR just to shoot it a lot to see if I like it before doing the double.
