What would a safe load be to start with in a 470NE Hornady XTP 400 grs with IMR 4831?

Start with 100 grs. and work up to POI..The load you will use is the one that comes to zero without crossing over. My Searcy would shoot 108 grs. at 2245 FPS to zero and so would another load of RL-15 at 2020 FPS, both to the same POI..I used the latter on buffalo with real good results. That pill isn't going to hold up well at higher speed impact. Will be interested in whether or not you find a load that regulates in the rifle. The best success I've had for .470 NE practice ammo has been a 500 gr cast GC slug with a flat nose. Regulates fine in Searcys and Merkels at both middle velocities w AA5744 and near real velocities using RL-15 and Dacron fiber. My Field Grade Searcy (an older one that I acquired "preowned") is regulated to 45 gr AA5744 with the 500 gr 0.476" FPGC and 85-87 gr RL-15 with 5 grains of Dacron. Am using BeLL cases and Fed 215 primers. The light load is in the 1500 fps range and swats white tails quite nicely. The RL-15 is more like the 2050 fps load that Atkinson favors with Woodleighs. Rine, My Evans 470 shoots IMR 4831 with the 500gr Woodleighs great. When I tried 400gr bullets with 4831 there was a lot of unburned powder left in the barrel. I would try another powder.

470 I have noticed the unburned powder, I think I will try the 500 gr pills then. Hornady tech support would not tell me about pushing their XTP out of the 470 when I called them Friday. What would be a starting load for the 500 gr woodleighs with IMR 4831?

I'd start with 100 grs and slowly work from there in 1 gr increments until the bullets come together. Mine regulates with 102 grs of IMR 4831 with my current lot of powder. I've noticed the slow powders can show substantial difference in various lots. When I first used IMR 4831 100 grs regulated well, when I used up that lot I had to go to 102grs with the next lot. Once I find a powder I like in a double I buy an 8lb canister and work up with that lot so I can load for a while. Federal 470s are loaded with Rel 15. Since your gun was regulated with that you may want to try it as well but you'll need a filler.

Is a filler required w/4831? Regards, hm 2 Chronicles 7:14: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

No, filler isn't required with 4831 in a 470.
