A few months back I took retreever up on his offer to meet him and a few other gents a couple hours east of here and touch off a few double rifle rounds. I ended up shooting his .450 No.2, Doc52's .577 NE, a .470 NE and a .500 NE. You all know how that goes -- them bastages set the hook....deep.

I may never get to Africa anytime soon...with the way work's going...but I've got a sweet new rifle to play with until then. This afternoon I picked up a like new Merkel .470 NE (140-2) with simply gorgeous wood.

The rifle came with better than 100 rds of brass, 50+ factory rounds, 5 bags of Kynoch wads (filler), several hundred bullets (Woodleigh, North Fork, Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, lead, jacketed, etc...), and all the necessary RCBS die (three boxes), and a nice leather belt cartridge holder. I can hardly wait to get out and play.

Mike/Doc -- When we gonna play again?

Matt,

Congrats on your rifle. I had one just like yours, you will enjoy it...my eyes just got to the point I have to have scoped rifles and just cannot bring myself to put a scope on a DR.

I sent you an email of the Pelican case I have for sale. Also have a soft Boyt case and 470 NE stuff (dies, brass, etc for sale).

Have a blast!

Jim

Matt,

What else do you expect when you hang out with "characters" if infamous repute? Next thing you know you'll be eating gunpowder and howling at the moon.

Great looking rifle! Congratulations and welcome to the club.

I'm glad he sold it and I'm glad you bought it. Dave Taber's a nice guy. Great price, generous package.

Matt, don't feel too bad, we all get hooked deep on the first one.... and the second one...and the third.....you get the idea. Whats bad is when you start thinking with every dollar you spend could be going on ammo, or another double, or a hunting trip.I hope you enjoy the rifle, it looks like a nice one!

Matt,

As I recall, Mike was also an evil influence on me. He and Rusty. I succumbed in January of 2006.

In all seriousness, I never met any group of gentlemen that went so far out of their way to help at the time complete strangers. And someone letting you shoot their double rifle with no strings attached was and still is a unique experience. I am glad I can count myself as a part of the DRSS.

Congratulations.

Good news is that while you agonize over the first one, it gets much easier to buy each subsequent one. Wink
