I was in Cabellas yesterday and they had a perty double that was a 360/400. One man said he thought it was a rebore. Too bad. Why do the specialize in rebores at Cabellas?

Is 400/360 the current calibre or what it was as quite a few 400/360's were rebored to other things. The guns are often small and light and good in the hands. William Evans sold heaps of them. Great calibre for deer / pigs and smaller.

I wounder if you could have it re rebored to 450/400. It was a nice gun. They mark it up a third at least . I think 11,000 would be a starting point.

Some of the 400/360's had enough metal at the chamber end to take the 450/400 case but most wouldn't. On top of that, the metal in the barrels wouldn't be thick enough. 9.3 x 74R was a more common re chamber. Look at the proof marks and have a look inside the chamber if you get a chance. Without any more info, I would say it is 400/360.

If it were rebored in Europe or Britian it would show in the proofs what was done. It will be marked as such. Ask to see the proof marks! What am I missing? Other than some guy at Cabela's said it was a rebore what indication is there that it was? Purdy made quite a few .360 double rifles. Paul Roberts was rechambering a lot of the British .360 double rifles to 9.3x74 but if this rifle is currently a 400/360 I would guess it started out that way. DRSS NRA life AK Master Guide 124

AK, Yep, Purdey, William Evans and a heap of others made a lot of rifles in this calibre. A great deer stalking rifle !!!

This gun has been discussed a few times. It's a Bentley and Playfair that was originally a 400/360 and has been rechambered and rebored to a 416, a Rigby, if I remember. BassPro in DFW had it for sale for several years before it made it's way to Cabelas. For some reason it's not on their site any longer but I believe still for sale.

No this is a different gun. Very nice and trim with engraving and good wood with case.Just a odd caliber. Also had a chamber casting.I think it said 360/400. The cast was alot smaller than a 400 case.

Aah, I misread your first post. If it's an Evans in 400/360 it was my rifle. It's a great gun that I'd hate to see rechambered. It's the most accurate double I've seen, shooting 1/2" groups at 50yds with 286 Woodleigh 9.3s and IMR4350. This one is a 400/360 Purdey as opposed to the 400/360 Westley. Both 400/360s are great calibres that are maligned primarily due to Taylor's comments that were an indictment more of the available bullets at the time. He raves about the 400/350 but puts the 400/360s down??? In reality, they are the same case with similar ballistics and the 400/360 has better bullet selection today using available 9.3s. You do need to measure the bores in all british doubles but particularly in 400/360s as there was a lot of variation in this calibre. A 400/360 Purdey should measure around .366 while the 400/360 Westley should measure around .360. The bores on this one measure .3645 IIRC, the slugs and chamber cast are in the case. It was built in 1903 for Lord Rothes and is very nice condition. I has JJ refinish the wood and reblack the barrels. The bores are in very good condition with no cordite burn and slight wear at the throat. It was built by Webley on an A&W C action as a first quality boxlock ejector and it weighs 8.75lbs. Cabelas is into it for close to asking so they don't have much room.
