Just looking at the Holts auction, the fore end would that be a replacement or is just the checkering done funny ? I have never seen a Holland with the checkering done all the way out on the fore end.

By the looks of the really crappy refinish (unfilled pores and shiny) on the buttstock I would guess that the fore end has at least been refinishd and recheckered.
What a shame of a job......

You can obviously get closer to the pictures than I've managed to. I don't see why we should not want chequering right out to the end, though, as that is the only sensible place to hold it.

One thing, H&H/the buyer obviously knew their riflescopes. Considering the work happily done to regulate barrels, I imagine there was some headshaking there when the Germans finally succumbed to image-movement.
