I just shot my new Krieghoff .500 double, & the recoil is BRUTAL; it's worse than my Searcy .577. So, I'm gonna need something to help tame the recoil, & I'm thinking a mercury recoil reducer. My question: Am I going to have to send the rifle to Krieghoff Int'l. in PA, or is this something that's pretty simple on a Krieghoff? Thanks. ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

Unless Krieghoff is notably different in how they attach the stock to the action, there should be a hole in the stock with a through-bolt. Remove the recoil pad, and measure the diameter and depth of the hole. Get a mercury recoil reducer that fits the hole and install per the instructions (the recoil reducer should be immobilized in the hole so it doesn't move). Then replace the recoil pad. George

Any qualified gunsmith can install the reducer. Be certain that it will not adversely effect the balance. What is the current weight? Deo Vindice, Don Sons of Confederate Veterans Black Horse Camp #780

I haven't checked the weight of the rifle, but I'm guessing around 10 1/2 lbs - too light for a .500. Probably an additional pound would help. This rifle rattles my head, but it sure points well. ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

Frank, may I suggest Glenn Baker at Woodcock Hill in Benton, Pa.? With advance notice, drive up one day, visit with Glenn, leave the Kreighoff and whatever little gunsmithing chores with him, spend the night (the Orvis place), pick your guns up the next morning and drive home. I have done this several times. Glenn is a great guy and a real hoot!! BTW, great trout fishing nearby. Deo Vindice, Don Sons of Confederate Veterans Black Horse Camp #780

Mike: I may think about your offer in a couple months; I'd love to go to Woodcock Hill & see some of their guns. ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

I would check the length of pull to see if it fits you properly. Yes I think 10 1/ 2 is a little light for a .500. I hope the mercury recoil reducer helps. Frank: I feel your pain! I have never owned a 500 NE but my buddy is a big fan and I have shot several of his. Everyone I have ever shot just seemed to kick the hell out of me. Bill is right. First thing to do is to check the length of pull. My K-gun is about 14.5 inches. I can live with that but I would prefer about 15 3/8s or so. You might want to give Krieghoff a call. They make their own recoil reducer called a BreaKO. It weighs about 14 oz. That would bring your gun to about 11.5 pounds and make it a lot more tolerable. Krieghoff also claims that the BreaKO reducer will offset the weight of the heavy barrels and give the rifle better balance. Dave try a slip on pad to see if you like the longer stock. Bill Member DSC,DRSS,NRA,TSRA A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. -Mark Twain There ought to be one day - just one – when there is open season on Congressmen. ~Will Rogers~
