OK...here's the scoop:

Heym 450 NE
Temp at a beautiful 70*...gotta love Florida in Nov.

480 gr Woodleigh softs; 84 gr of RL15(no filler)-2107/2113/2116/2201
480 gr Woodleigh solids; same charge of RL15-2171/2189/2192/2195

Same bullets, 85 gr of RL15; softs-2184/2190/2195/2212
solids-2191/2199/2215/2223

95 gr of H4831sc; solid-2136/2046/2090/2091
96 gr of same; softs-2016/2044/2056/2072

91 gr of H4350; solid-2180/2205/2230/2235
92 gr of same; softs-2115/2135/2144/2145

All loads shot low...rear sight has too deep of a V....sorting that out with a better rear sight. JJ had installed a new warthog ivory fron sight that was a touch higher than the old tiny bead.

RL15 loads shot the best with the 85 gr load begining regulate nicely...4 shots in 3" at a lasered 52 yds. I'm going to try some 84.5 gr loads along with some more 85 gr loads for comparison.

My Merkel 470 weighs 1.25# more than my Heym 450, and has a mercury recoil reducer and kicks A HELL OF A LOT LESS.

The 4831 loads KICK MORE...at least to me.

I couldn't tell the diff between the RL15 and the H4350 loads.

But that was enough from the bench for me....I'll shoot the 404 bolt all day!

She's gettin' there.........

Is the Heym's 450 action slender than a Heym in 470?

Oz...can't answer that....new guy probably could.
Bill...yes...great progress. My 470 liked RL15 and this Heym also seems to. Nice thing with the 450....no plug needed. Now if I just get those sights from NECG in the mail shortly!

Compared to 4831, my RL-15 loads have less recoil. That goes for loads in my 450/400 3 inch, 9.3X74R, and my 404 Jeffery.

By volume the RL-15 is a lot less than the 4831.

RL-15 is a position sensitive powder. If you use a filler, such as Dacron polyfill or a foam plug as Kynoch does, you will get very consistant velocities.

Bill.....I'm going to try the rear sight that has the skeleton look with the red fiber opic insert as well as a V that I can file to verticle alignment.
Rusty...I agree with your assesment of the RL15....in the 470 it gives very consistent results with the Kynoch foam plugs. I'm not using a filler in the 450 as Wright says it's only neede in anything above the 450. Do you think I should consider the plugs in the 450?
You DO hear the powder move slightly in the case, but it does seem to fill it mostly up.

Thanks.

I have the same issue when I load the .500 NE. So, what I now do is cut the foam wad in half (crosswise) to take up the little space in the .500 NE. I use a whole wad in the .470 NE. It has worked well for the past 3 years.

Thanks, what I was thinking....I've got a couple of bags of the Kynoch plugs...might just see what happens using a "half-plug".

BFJ....I need to take it to the office and weigh it on our digital postal scales....the one at home varies too much....the wife adjusts it to fit her mood. But I recall I weighed it on those scales a while back and it barely broke 10#....and I do mean barely.

If you are looking for a good practice round pick up some 350gr from Hawk Bullets and load them on top of your 84grs of RL 15 they will shoot to same POI with less recoil makes a nice pig load...By the way I use 3grs of fiber fill on top of my 84grs of RL 15
best of luck

Thanks, Bob.....a good practice load with less recoil is always nice! Also, a good woods load for whitetail too....now that they're not in the fields!
