I had my friend Jared come up and we got three whitetails between us with the Chapuis. That makes 2 buffalo, impala, kudu bull, kudu cow, 2 whitetail bucks and a doe with the double rifle since September.

GOOD job and NICE BUCK!!

I have only killed a black bear with mine so far. I am about to post a question about reloading the 9.3 x 74. Do you shoot reloads?
I am trying to duplicate the factory load.

Once again CONGRATS!!

Try a starting load around 65 gr of H4831SC and the 286 grain Privi bullets. Work it up from there to around 2300 fps. I used CCI LRP to work up this load. If you have mag primers you may need to reduce accordingly.

RAC,

Great buck. I keep saying I'm going to hunt Whitetail some day. I even put in for a Montana tag this year but didn't draw.

Are you using Prvi 286 grain bullets in your 9.3 X 74 for hunting? I'm asking because I tried them on a small Mule deer last year and felt they were too soft, they killed the deer but absolutely destroyed the heart, it was just pieces in the chest cavity. This year during elk season I put down a wounded five point that came by me and neither the bull or I was impressed when I shot him three times at not over fifty yards. Though I didn't get to examine the bull for bullet performance I again got the impression that they were too soft. Next year I'm going to try some old Normas and some Nosler partitions that I have on hand to see what they do. But I'm curious about other peoples experience with the Prvi 9.3 bullet on game as I have several hundred on hand. For now I'll use them only for practice.

Yep, that was the Privi. So far 3 deer and complete penetration. I don't know about using them on big animals but they kill whitetails dead.

Damn fine buck! Congratulations.

I've only taken a couple of piggies and a couple of deer. Found on the first piggie that the Speer 270 gr HotCore is simply too soft as it left big hunks of lead in the wound canal.

Switched to the 286 gr Nosler Partition and never looked back. I stock those for the two 9,3x62 rifles I own, so this was a natural thing for me to do.

Also have 20 gauge 3" shotgun barrels for the rifle. Prior to this shotgun I was never very good at wing shooting ... even with a Citori White Lightning which I adore. One bird trip with the Chapuis ... it is DEADLY with a terrifically long reach ... and it's only a 20 gauge. Definitely the best shotgun I've ever used.

Again, congratulations of the great list of game you've taken with the Chapuis!

Mike

RAC,
Nice whitetail! I shot one myself last weekend with a muzzleloader. I will use one of the .470 or .450 doubles in a couple of weeks, as rifle season opens in Oklahoma.

Mike,
I agree that the Speer Hot Core is too soft for pigs. My wife uses them in her .338 WM, for deer and they work great, but busting through the armor of pigs, is a different story. My friend and I shot 2 Russian Boars, 2 weeks ago.
Pig 1 (420-lbs) was a Manton .470NE with a 500gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. It entered the right rear haunch, and was found in the skull, at the left ear. Perfect mushroom at 0.867" and still weighed 496.7 grains...that's a loss of only 3.3 grains.
Pig 2 (360-lbs) was a Joseph Harkom .450BPE with a 300gr Meister Hard Cast. Similar shot as above...up the tail pipe, and found in the skull. Barely deviated at all (flattened the front a little) and weighed 287.1 grains.
I was most pleased with the performance of both bullets...very different construction... different velocity... same shot angle/distance.

I have pictures of all this, but my e-mail here at home crapped out, and I can't seem to get into my Photobucket account from work. I will post, if I can get it working.

Nitrodave,

I have been advised not to use Trophy Bonded softs (or solids) from any double rifle because of the solid shank of the bullet. JJ peridoux was the one who warned me off.

Thought I'd pass on the info.

Agreed. I wouldn't use a solid shank in a double.

John,
I will pass this on. The TBBC was loaded and shot by my friend in his 470. I have stayed with the Woodleighs myself. I just sent him a copy of Wright's new book, which has some great sections on projectiles, wads, chamber ringing. I found it most educational.
What makes the TBBC soft, different from the Woodleigh soft? I have never really studied the TBBC or cut one open, but they seem similar...

Dave:

The Woodleigh has a lead core, the TBBC soft has a lead front but a monolithic shank.

400Nitro,
Thank you! That explains the perfect little "Atomic Mushroom Cloud" shape. Beautiful bullet, but I agree that this wouldn't be a good choice for doubles...sounds like the TBBC should be as hard on barrels as an X-bullet...solid shank and no where for the copper to go. I just assumed that the TBBC was a bonded lead core, like the Woodleigh soft.
Thanks again for the education.

After hearing everyone else using there double rifles on deer I plan to use my new Beretta Gold Sable in 9.3x74r in two week on deer here in Kansas, I haven't used iron sights in the field for so long I hope I can keep the bullets somewhere in KS. The rifle does very well at the range with 66 grains of 4831 and 286 Pri bullet fro Graf and Sons.

A scoped 9,3x74R Chapuis is one of the best hunting rifles on the Planet.

With mine I have shot my bigest deer, bigest 2 pigs, second biggest bear, the most bear, the most coyotes, over a dozen impala, a dozen zebra, a classified number of baboon,, a giraffe, a bunch of other stuff, my biggest cape buff and an elephant.

I have even killed several turkeys with it... Big Grin

+1 on the effectiveness, and pure pleasure, of using a double rifle for deer.

Some of the best fun I have had with a rifle was deer stalking with an H and H .275 magnum.

I killed two deer with mine using Norma 286,
that bullet was too soft and did a lot more damage than it should have on 140 lb and 115 lb light skinned animal.

I got a box of cup points to try, should be deadly with less meat damage, maybe just a little tracking involved, it should work just like a old style hard cast Kieth.
