I have been looking at Sabatti's more closely here lately. Some of the recent talk would appear to indicate that Sabatti and or Cabela's has become aware of the concerns presented by ground or oblong muzzles. Almost all of the Sabatti DR listed in Cabela's on line Gun Library show targets with "final regulation" noted. One target has two shots in the lower left outside of the circles with the final regulation shots in the upper right but closer together. A change of probably more than 12 inches. The sad thing is that there was one target with two shots less the two inches apart but low and to the left of center. The "final regulation shots" were farther apart and farther away from center to the upper right. The original shots looked better!

I e-mailed Cabela's-Buda and asked about muzzle grinding. Here's their response:

Attached are a couple photos of the Sabatti you have inquired about. Although the muzzle openings appear symmetrical, there is a suggestion that the left muzzle has been slightly ground for regulation. Though sometimes unsightly, ground regulating offers an effective process at a lower cost to the manufacturer and is the primary reason for Sabatti s price point. If you care to contact us at the number below, one of our Gun Library staff can assist with any further questions.

Ground muzzles may very well be the "primary reason for Sabatti's price point" but it is also the very thing giving them and Cabelas a Black Eye over this issue! It is also the reason I'm not buying one yet! With that attitude, possibly never! It sounds from that response that they have yet to learn their lesson on cutting corners!

I really hope that response came from one of the floor "helpers" and not one of the Gun Library staff who are supposedly firearms "experts".

The response came for the "Internet Content Provider" for the Gun Library whatever that equates to.

Not too sure I would include the word "effective" in their as it seems that even those regulated by the "ground" method don't always shoot.

I'm not saying "most" because we are more likely to hear of non shooters than shooters.

At the NRA expo in St. Louis this year, Cabela's had Sabattis on display. They looked nice but upon asking the rep about regulation and muzzle grinding he just gave a bullshit reply about not having problems except in rare cases and then he walked away. Denial.

For what you pay for a Sabatti, you can get a very nice bolt rifle. For not much more you can get a very nice double like a Chapuis, Krieghoff, Merkel, or a very nice Searcy. There is a Searcy in the classifieds for $8,500. If you can't afford or don't want to spend the money on a double, buy a bolt gun. If you can, buy something a bit better. It costs more to buy a properly regulated double but it is well worth it. All this Sabatti talk makes my ears bleed.

I don't know about "not much more" My Chapuis, while not outrageously expensive, IMO, was significantly more expensive than my Sabatti. 8,500 is several times more money than what I spent. And frankly, out of the price range of many people who would otherwise enjoy a double.

Had I purchased the 9.3x74R instead of the 45-70, I have a feeling that I'd have all the gun I have in my Chapuis.

We've falsely inflated the price of some doubles, and Sabatti proved it.

The US market inflated the price of doubles, until you lot decided
they were the must have thing, prices were OK for years, rising
slightly as most items of this nature do.

Once US buyers jumped on the buying wagon, prices sky rocketed as
people saw the money to be made.

And re Sabatti, well, all they proved was a lesson in how to ruin
a brand name by cutting corners and rushing a product to market
that wanted a cheap double but not that cheap that it didn't work.

They would have sold more in the long term if it was only $1000 more
but regulated properly.

No, they proved what Bikal had started. That doubles do not have to be super expensive.

Now I agree, had they spent another 600-1000 per gun, and regulated the rest of them the right way, they'd have done much better. But that would still put them at 3-4K and a hell of an entry level double.

The simple fact is, the price of todays "entry" level doubles, namely Merkel, and Chapuis, is out of the price range of alot of people who would otherwise own them. Sabatti, and Bakial have proven that the only reason that is, is because people (namely us double rifle owners) are willing to pay a premium for them.

For just a bit more money I think I would invest in a 120 year old lower end BPE and revel in real workmanship while hunting non dangerous game.

Might have some interest in one of these in 9.3 X 74R? What/where would I start looking for one? Read an article on this gun in August issue of Peterson's Hunting Magazine. Thanks.

Larry, take a good light and a magnifying glass and perhaps a few white cardboard wads to slip into the muzzle and reflect the light, then look for properly round and unground muzzle crowns. Then check the test target. That's what I expect to do. The Gun Library staff can be very UNhelpful, so be prepared to do the work yourself.

Maybe Sabatti is simply ahead of the pack and they will all 'Dremel Regulate' in the future? Big Grin .... sorry....
