I have just spent a couple of days in Berlin, Germany, and was finally able to see and hold a Heym double rifle. It was a model 80B in 9,4x74R , with beautiful upgraded wood. It was a very slim and well handling rifle, and it fit me perfectly. Nice iron sights that lined up perfectly. And it is available in .375 Flanged....

Could anyone tell me the main difference between this rifle and the model 88B? Are there any differences e.g. in frame size, weight, barrel profile and balance? (I am considering 9,3 and .375) ?

New Guy will be able to give much better info, but the 80B is built on a smaller frame than the 88, weighs considerably less, comes standard with set triggers and extractors (only), and costs about half as much. I don't know why, with all the interest here in medium-bore doubles, it doesn't get discussed more, Chris even hides it on his website, it doesn't show up in the "Double Rifles" link, looks like a sweet rig, and should be perfect for either the .375 Flanged or 9.3X74.

I agree, judging from how the 9,3 felt I would guess that a .375 would also be very nice. Most .375s seems to be built on frames capable of calibers up to .500 and with price tags in the "large-bore range", which is much higher than medium-bores. Aothough more expensive than Krieghoff etc, the 80B costs a lot less than the 88B.

I have looked around for the weight of a .375, but have so far not been able to find it.

Jeffives link shows 7# depending on caliber.

Built on the same frame I can't imagine a .375 Flanged would be significantly heavier than a 9.3X74.

I see that Jeffives link also shows 9# for the 88B depending on caliber. However, the 80B range of calibers start out with smaller calibers than the 88B, so I would still like to see a comparison based on the same calibers. (9,3 and .375)

Sorry, I've been meaning to post here but keep forgetting to.

The 80B is the smallest double rifle frame we make. It is available from 22 Hornett (delivered one last week) up to 375 H&H. Truthfully, it would be a very light 375 or 9.3, but would make an ideal 5,6, or 7mm.

It has the two bites on the lumps, but does not have the Greener cross-bolt. It is not available with ejectors. It does have cocking indicators, a set front trigger or an articulated front trigger are available.

From here, you step up to the standard 88B. The action size is better suited for a 375 or 9.3 and has ejectors, intercepting sears, cocking indicators, Greener cross-bolt and a set front trigger or an articulated front trigger are available.

Both are available as cape guns, or with two different rifle barrels as well. We can also build both as boxlock or sidelock.

The 80B is less expensive, but not by a lot.

When considering the price and calibers mostly sold here in the states, most customers opt for the ejectors and the slightly larger frame of the 88B. We don't have them linked on the web page, but the 80B is available.

To continue the frame sizes, the next step up is the 88B PH/Safari frame (boxlock or sidelock)

Then the 88B "Jumbo" which is the largest.

I suppose anyone is free to do what they want within rifle availability or manufacturing limits but why bother having a 10 or 11 lb. 375 H&H?

Personally, I'd rather have a 7 lb. 375 w/o ejectors than a 10 lb. 375 with ejectors. Though ejectors are nice the double is 99.9% of the time a two shot affair anyway.

Will - That's what gunmakers do - offer customers options (not everyone likes chocolate.)

That speaks to the point above exactly. YOU may want a 7lb .375, but not everyone does. An 80B would be ideal for you.

If the next guy wants and 8.5lb 375, then the 88B is for him.

The next guy may want a 9.5lb 375, the 88B PH/Safari is for him.

I think Heym is on the right track. I would prefer a 7-7.5lb one myself, but would settle for a 13oz recoil reducer in the butt if it did not affect regulation.
