Just got through sizing 20 cases for 400 Nitro Express. Mighty pretty brass. He says it should be on the streets around May!

RUSTY, is the 9.3X74R brass hitting the streets at the same time? I'd like to have a couple hundred 9.3X74R cases as well!

If 400 NE is up for it, maybe he can ask. I'll give him a call. Otherwise I'll be glad to do so since I dealt with Hornady pretty extensively when I was having my dies made. Brewed up a bunch of loads today in antipation of next DRSS event. Bob

Rusty and/or Bob,
Please put me down for (100) 450/400 3" cases if you get a group buy going. This is great.

So Rusty, are these for .408 or .411 bullets?

Didn't you order a Searcy? I have forgotten what they are made to.

Will, Only the sizing die knows for sure. Big Grin

These sized very nicely in my .408 dies.

Searcy is .411, Ruger is .410, I do not know what the new Hyem 450/400 3 inch double rifle will be. It will have 26" barrels.

The Hornady brass will do just fine in all of them.

Folks now are using BeLL brass in .408/.411 rifle right now. Just make sure you have the proper dies, no big deal!

Maybe we can get 400 Nitro Express to get us a group buy deal on the new brass for the 450/400 and the 9.3. IF not Hey, it's going to be everywhere.

Waiting is always the worst part!

Rusty,

It just amazes me that the 450/400 can come in so many sizes and still be called the same cartridge. What in the world does one do for bullets? If the bore doesn't match the available bullets, you need to swage bigger bullets down?

And if the bore is bigger than any available bullets? Custom bullets must be made?

Wow, you have to have a real love affair with that "cartridge" to put up with all that.

Do you have any idea what your Heym will weigh? I had one of their 375's at one point with the little action that weighed about 7 1/2 pounds. I made a real mistake when I sold it.

I will not dive into my doubles-weigh-too-much diatribe at the moment Smiler, but I would hope that your Heym is significantly lighter than the 9 1/2 to 10 pound Searcy's.

The best of luck with your 450/400, whatever it turns out to be.

Will, do you think that a light weight 450-400 at about 8.5lbs is OK? I am having Butch make me up a round action double with two sets of barrels. One in 450-400,3" and one in 375 Flanged mangum. Both will have his quick detatchable mounts for scoping. What do consider optimum weight for the pair?

HA! I have no idea what an optimum wieght would be. Twenty years ago when I was in a hell of alot better shape than I am in now, carrying a 10 1/2 lb. 375 (with a scope) was a real chore. I was ready to give it the deep six!

Personally, I see no reason that a 375 needs to weigh more than 7 1/2 lbs. The same for a 450/400 since the two will have nominally the same recoil.

Even John Taylor recognized the falacy of heavy doubles sixty (?) years ago. But doubles are still obese!

But getting one of the makers to get them down that light will probably be impossible.

If you can get your rifles down to 8 or 8 1/2 lbs., count your blessings.

Will,
Bless your heart! I know you are trying to do your best to love a cartridge you really don't like! It's OK!

There are lots of us who do like it and that's all that matters!

The differance in bore size is a result of early
British rifle makers.

Ruger's idea is to adopt a bullet that you could shoot in a .408 or .411 rifle.

As far as bullets. I'm looking forward to Rugers bullets which will pass through a Corbon .408 sizing die and be ready for my .408 rifle.

Now BobC just has to load his up for his .411. As matter of fact he has a whole bunch of 405 Winchester bullets to choose from for his .411 caliber 450/400.

I appreciate your concern, Will! We'll be OK, trust me! Big Grin

Will,

Bullets are DRAWN, to make them smaller.

Bullets are SWAGED, to make them bigger.

Will - the HEYM barrels and chambers are made to CIP specs. Which, as I understand, is also the case for both the Ruger and Hornady.

Chris,

I am sure Heym is doing the right thing. I liked the ones I've had. As long as one knows which 450/400 they are getting, life should be good! Smiler
