Anyone have a source of .411" diameter 400 gr gas bullets with gas checks? What are you 450-400 owners shooting in terms of cast bullets?

Mt Baldy custom cast bullets, Cody Wy 85414, ph 307-754-5255. 410gr. fngc, .411. These shoot very well in my ruger #1. Give him a call. JS

I shot come cast bullets in my 450/400 3 1/4" that I got from a buddy.

They weighed @ 300grains. I loaded them with 44gr of IMR 4198 and 12 grains of Dacron [poly] filler.

Velocity @1700fps. Hit to the sights and regulated great at 50 yards.

2kudu: Thanks for that heads up. My No. 1 in .450-400 arrived Monday, and I've been looking for some 400-grain cast.

Heym:
NEI Handtools has made ALL of my double rifle moulds from .450-400 up to 4-bore. They are excellent quality, price is fair, and a quick turnaround as they cut to order and don't keep an inventory. For most common sizes you can order with or without a gas check.

Thanks for the input. I did contact Mt. Baldy and have some 400 gr FNGC in .412" on the way. Also found some intersting designs at Montana Bullets that I am in the process of ordering - a couple of FN/GC designs under 400 gr and some plainbase at 400 gr. Will let you know how they work out in the future. I had great luck with cast bullets in a Heym 470 and am hoping for the same performance from a newly acquired VC 450-400. Cheers.

Very interested in seeing your results as I have the exact same rifle due in any day.
Did you slug your barrel? What made you decide to go to a .412 slug?

Snowwolfe:

.412" was as small as Mt. Baldy would go. My VC is supposed to be .410" and although I'd rather have .411", I think .412" will be ok for cast bullets. Anyone out there say 0.002" over groove diameter is too big for cast bullets and will cause damage in a double? In the meantime, I've ordered a .411" sizer die for when I start casting my own. Will slug bore to get diameter for certain before loading any cast bullets.

Will post findings in a month or so after I've tried the Mt Baldy and Montana Bullet Works designs that are on the way.

Couldnt you run the .412's through the .411 sizing die and see if it makes any difference?

That's the plan. I ordered a .411" die from Buffalo Arms Co. this afternoon.

Interesting conversation. Thanks. I'm about a year away from my first double (planning on a VC in 450-400 or a Searcy Field Grade if they are still available then) and will enter the reloading arena at some point.

Question: Why have you choosen to use cast bullets in what I am reading is not an older gun? Is it simply that you are using it as its the one your gun likes the best? I live/hunt in the Peoples Republic of California in lead free areas so I'll focus any reloading using lead free options but would enjoy exploring cast bullets.

For me, same reason I use them in my various handguns. They are very cheap and usually can be made to be very accurate. So for someone like me who loves to practice shooting offhand they are a good choice.
I also would not hesitate to use them on a big moose if the accuracy was there.
Jacketed bullets will usually run about $1 a piece or more, unless you stay with bullets designed for revolvers. Cast bullets, if you make them yourself, maybe a quarter each, tops.

Plus it gives me something to do in the winterSmiler
