While I prefer partridge sights or a peep and a frond post for "paper" shooting, for hunting I much prever a wide V and a round front sight.

The sights on my 450 No2 are my favorite, especially the shape of the rear sight.

I even put express sights on my Freedom Arms 475 Linebaugh revolver.

For close, dangerous game hunting, all I know is what John Taylor told me! The sights are of course the century old standard of the shallow V rear and round bead front.

My only variation is the big white front bead so I can see it! As in the #3 photo, they seem to work for me.

Is that the single trigger Chapuis?

#1 is a Merkel 141.
#2 is a single trigger Heym 9.3X74R.
#3 is a Merkel 140-2 Safari 470NE, sights by JJ Paradeau, at Champlin's! #3 is my choice as well, with a white bead, and white flip-up moon sight, with the back sight cut to wide "V"

The fiber optics have something to qualify them, but they just don't look right on a double rifle. Roll Eyes I have an idea the #2 Heym sights work well, but I can't stand the reverse shape of the back sight. It looks like it would cut your hands with those sharp points on each side of the green inset, though I understand the reason for the shape, being to hide less of the moveing target.

I have both wide-V and the Merkel partridge front, and square apeture of the back sight! I shoot equally well with either, but I find the round front bead (white), nesting in the bottom of a wide-V to be the fastest for me. I also find the white line line up the back face of the rear sight to be helpfull, but my favorite is a tri-angle with it's top point at the apex of the wide V , with the front bead sitting on it's top, be better. This should be either white, or platnum, and a brass front bead is harder for me to see, than a white bead, in fadeing light.
I had a Westley Richards double a few years ago that had a front bead that was a small diamond, sort of a pre-fiber optics, and it worked very well, in most light conditions!

Anyone with good clear pictures of different sights on doubles please post them, or links to them. There are many good ones other than the ones posted here, but those were the only ones I could find quickly! beer

I had the No 2 setup on a Heym straight pull in 35Whelen and they were the quickest acquisition sights I've ever used. Tried to duplicate them when I had my Mdl 95 405 built but could not find the rear with the fourescent insert. Used an ERA without the insert. Would love to have them on my doubles. They are QUICK.

Photo #3 is my rifle. The large front "white sight" is a flip-up over a smaller, shiny brass bead. The rear sight is the basic Merkel u-notch re-worked by JJ into a shallow V. It lines up very fast and is very accurate. I can assure you that up close in low light, that large front flip-up works REAL nice. Much beyond 30yds, it covers a bit too much of the target....but that's not what it's for.

Back when Ashley was still running AO sights, now called XS sights they made a very well executed large ring apature with a white line square front post for the Krieghoff double.

I'd be interested to know if it is still available. I find the ghost ring with a white line front to be the quickest and most instinctual of all the iron sights by a wide margin.

Of the sights above #3 works best for me.

#3 please, and a big white front bead. The accuracy is second to the speed, and the accuracy is still there.
