Can anyone direct me to instruction or help me figure out why I have been getting my knuckles busted. I have been shooting a Chapuis in .470. I am loading Woodleigh 500gr. and swagged 500 grain bullets to around 2100fps on my chrono. Most recently I am smacking my knuckle nearly every shot right or left barrel. The questions I have are. 1. Is it my grip? 2. Is it the LOP affecting the way the rifle is recoiling? 3. Am I not standing correctly, perhaps need to move my tongue to the other side? I know this is crazy but if you could help me a bit I would appreciate it. Frank

Sounds like your LOP is too short. Try purchasing one of the thickest slip on recoil pads you can find and see if that helps. The pad will increase your LOP.

Frank, my middle finger used to get busted every time that I shot my 470,my shooting technique was allowing the gun to move backwards into my shoulder just enough to cause the trigger guard to hit the finger,I now hold the gun much more tighter into my shoulder and no more pain DRSS

Thank you for the assist. I will be shooting it tomorrow and will let you know. I do have one of the rubber slip on pads that should add 1/2 inch to the LOP. Frank

A Merkel in .470 did the same thing to me. My Krieghoff and Chapuis don't. The shape of the trigger guard is better. Holding the gun into your shoulder with your right hand and pushing forward with your left will help a lot. SCI lifer NRA Patron DRSS DSC

If the slip on helps but you are still getting hit on the finger, try putting some additional padding between your shoulder and the but of the gun, such as a thick oven mitt. If you are getting your finger cut more when shooting the rear trigger than the front, this is almost certainly your issue. If the extra padding works, you'll need to get a good gunsmith to add a spacer for you to get the LOP correct. Good luck.

The number one thing you can do to mitigate finger bashing is to hold the rifle correctly. If you are pinching the fore end you are going to get you middle finger bashed. Grab the forend with a firm and full grip. If the rifle has splinter forend, wrap your fingers around the barrel too and squeeze tight. 80% of your grip strength is on the forend 20% on the pistol grip, this will solve your finger bashing issue assuming you rifle isn't way to short for you. This the wrong way to grip a forend. This is the correct way.
