Does anyone more knowledgable than I (and it's a long list!) cast bullets to shoot for practice in their .470NE? I looked briefly and couldn't find a mould. If someone does and could impart some wisdom I'd appreciate it.

I have a mold that casts a 525 grain bullet but I'll have to look to see who the maker is. I have found that .475 pistol bullets are cheap and easier to work with. 400 grain Speer Gold Dots shoot great with mild recoil.

I have usd Cast Performance 425 gr. WFN and LFN gas checked bullets in my 470. Had a full power load and a practice load and both regulated well. Just had to use the 150 yd leaf to get the practice load to shoot to point of aim. Practice load with XMP5744 was running around 1600 fps and full power load around 2100 fps. They shot well in my Heym. Also used 510 gr. Cast FNGC from Mt Baldy in my Heym with decent results. Sold it before I did a lot of development.

Bwanna,

My mold was made by LBT. It turned out a little heavy at 525 grs but shoots well in my gun. Lighter bullets usually regulate easier so I'd go with something lighter than mine. Lee makes a couple of .475 molds in the 325 to 400 gr range. I've used Lee mold for years and had good luck out of them.

I use the RCBS 500gr mold.

A bit spendy, good quality and I have had good luck with it. When you realize how much you save over practice with jacketed bullets, the money comes back pretty fast.

I use a Ballisti-Cast mold #1431. Had them make it up as a 500 gr GC. Cast in wheel Weights. Sized to .476 and lubed w Carnauba Red.

These folks make molds very much like Hensley and Gibbs ... highest quality, same design. Simply superb!

My old Searcy shoots them to ~1.5" groups at 100 yards (2R, 2L) using Fed215s with AA5744.

Give Tom a call and tell him what you want! His stuff is top quality and he's FAST. You can have two different weights of bullets from a mold block too. No Problem. You want aluminum brass or iron mold blocks.. No Problem. They use Lee handles too.
