Last weekend I hunted with my "little" Heym 26B in 30/30.

I have a Leupold 4X Compact on this double and it keeps the ackage light slim and trim.

One Morning before daylight, I was at the "pig hole". I was hunting behind a fallen tree, hoping to get a ig.

I heard several coyotes howling all around me, including one that was really close...

At @6:38 am I see movement below me,cannot tell if it is a coyote, or a raccoon, and immediately shoulder the rifle. It is a coyote. Eeker

He is moving and I track him in the scope and let one go...

This O/U has such little recoil I see the muzzle flash, and the coyote go right down and kick a time or two.

Because I am using a double, I am able to keep him in the scope, and I am prepared to fire if he seems to be regaining his feet.

He is a big male. Range 25 yards.

A couple of days later, hunting in a different area, I see 6 turkey gobblers. Two have long big beards.

They are feeding and milling about and a buck is standing among them.

With my binos I pick out the biggest bearded one.

He finally seperates from the others enough so I can get the scope on him, but I cannot shoot.

I keep track of him in the rifle scope as he moves around with the others...

After a few minutes I get a clear shot, and take it even though he is moving.
Again because of the low recoil of this 30/30 double I see the turkey is hit, but he recovers and heads into the thick stuff.

I am able to track him through the trees and as he goes through a foot and a half space between the trees I fire again, and hit him.

When I get to him, a 44 Mag shotshell in the head is used as a finisher..,

If I had not had a double there is NO WAY I would have gotten a second shot.

The low recoil of this Heym 30/30 was also a plus as I never lost sight of the bird...

I did loose a little breast meat, but the heart , liver, and gizzard was untouched... Those are my favorite parts. Big Grin

I really like this Heym 30/30 Schwarzkittel.

I will have to get it a better scope for low light pig and varmint hunts, one with an illuminated reticle. I still want to keep that scope small and light as well.
I have a 30mm scope mount for it, as most illuminated scopes ar 30mm.

The 4x Compact is perfect for the daylight.

I shot the coyote with Hornady Lever Evolution, and the turkey with Winchester 170gr RN.

Tony, I hope you bring it to Brady! I got to handle/fire one of Chris' 26B's (9.3) at a DRSS event and I must say it is a fine rifle! Another use I could see it being handy for is horseback hunting! Two quick shots and the cocking type safety I think would be much safer on horseback!

PS-was that turkey kill legal? sofa

I ate some of that turkey today...

In most counties in Texas you can use a rifle for turkeys, even in the spring where I hunt.

Hog Killer, I just shoot it "Gangsta Style...

ie Sideways. Big Grin

I will bring it to DRSS.

I too was wondering about the turkey..in TN you couldn't do that. Shotguns only. We have a decent turkey flock but I guess not enough to open it up to rifles.

Anyway, I've got a little custom S/S Parker 30-30..really fun to play around with. Its last owner was said to have taken quite a few hogs in La. with it.

You use factory or handloaded ammo in the Heym?

So far I have used factory ammo.

I have not set up all my reloading stuff since I moved.

It was factory regulated with 170gr Winchester, it shoots it and the Hornady 160gr Lever Evoultion best, but shoots any of the 170gr factory loads I have tried in it so far pretty good.

One of these days I'll get a digital cam and get some of the younguns' to show me how to do that. The Parker started life as a twin trigger 20 ga. Trojan grade extractor model. It's a custom project by a gunsmith I think in La. who did his best to duplicate the African double gun look. All new stock (traditional cheek piece), fine wood, 1/4 rib, color case frame, folding express sights, original Parker grip cap, a french-fitted compartmentalized case, lots of accessories (antique oil bottle, chromed snap caps, special sling and ammo packed in very old .30 WCF boxes) and it's regulated at 100 yds. Requires custom handloaded ammo. Very accurate at 100. My knowledge of proper classic double terminology is limited (yep, I admit to that) but fwiw the original barrels were cut off entirely just forward of the breeches and all new barrels were added and only the existing rear portion was sleeved. Hope I've said that correctly. Not sure where that leaves it on the scale quality wise for shotgun conversions. Anyway, I'm happy with it and it's a keeper.

But, I don't want to stray too far here from the Heym..

Shack

That sounds like a nice double.

What load do you shoot in it?

The load data that came with it says 170 gr Rem bullet with 32 gr. of WW-748. The brass is R-P. Don't know about the primers or velocity. (Use at your own risk etc etc).

Since I'm not a handloader I have to conserve my supply of these, but my gunsmith can make up some more when I need them.

The two boxes are Win, both old, one is the green box and the other is the yellow box marked Western Super. It's so old you can hardly open it. It was picked for that though and looks really cool packed in the case with the gun.

Perhaps someone else here has an O/U or S/S in 30-30. There're bound to be a few out there in this all-time famous cartridge. Afterall, they only say of it, that it's killed more deer than all other cartridges combined..

I have actually very vaquely heard of the Stag name. But don't remember anything of it. That name today I think is more another kind of gun.

There really should be a good niche market for the relatively low power 30-30 in shotgun conversions or even new guns..especially if "made in America" were the overall theme for it, considering the role that cartridge has played.

Now of course, if we're toying around with U.S. themed doubles, what I could seriously consider buying is a S/S in Winchester .348 (as used in the Winchester Model 71 heavy lever gun). Flanged cartridge, relatively heavy bullet, 30-06 type energy and enough knock down for anything in N.A. But, I have never heard of such being built.

I haven't tried the 30-30 factory ammo in the Parker, although I do have some that I use in a Model 94. My gunsmith said there would be accuracy problems. I would probably want to know more about the ballistics of both rounds in advance. One day I'll have to borrow someone's chronograph out at the club and see what I've really got going on with that custom load and compare it with whatever the factory version does.
