I have a new Heym 577 that should be arriving by the end of the month and I have a bear hunt scheduled starting on the 16th of May. I have not been able to locate 577 Kynoch ammo (gun was regulated with same).

Does ANYONE have a lead on 577 Kynoch ammo?

Try David Powell at Gunsinternational. He had some a while back. Also there is a Kynoch web site you can order ammo from.

I contacted folks at the Kynoch USA web site and they are out of 577 and not sure when additional inventory will be ordered.

You might also try Safari Arms or Superior ammunition to load you some 577.

If you decide to contact Superior Ammo, give Lonnie a call. They Load the following to duplicate the Kynoch ammunition specs:

-Barnes TSX 750g
-Woodleigh Soft 750g
-Woodleigh FMJ 750g

Be sure to confirm/verify with them that you want to adhere to duplicating the Kynoch specs.

I believe these are the specs but you can double check with Lonnie to be certain:

28" Barrel
2050FPS (muzzle), 7010 Energy Ft/Lbs (muzzle)
1960 FPS (50 Yds.), 6400 Ft/Lbs (50 Yds.)
1874 FPS (100 Yds.), 5860 Ft/Lbs (100Yds.)

Shawn: Always a pleasure to hear from you. Thanks for the detailed info and I'll give Lonnie a call this morning and see what he can do. I have used them in the past for various loads and have always been satisfied.

A couple of friends and I ordered Heym 577s last year at the Heym Big Bore Shoot for an Aussie buffalo hunt this summer. Once we have the rifles we'll work up our own little magic but until then… it is commercially available ammo (not an option or so it seems) or loads from boutique reloaders.

Glad to hear you are squared away. I am certain you will be thrilled with the Heym double in .577 NE. Be sure to post a photo when you are able. I hope we will see you again in Germany next year. It will be an exciting event.

Best always,
Shawn

S James, did you get the boxlock built on the new large action, or a sidelock rifle on their "Jumbo" action?

James don't worry abut the ammo, a stout rifle like that will make a great club in bay up you can alway go back to your 450-400 if the bears are treeing.

I've done the double / double battery safari twice now. Loads of fun! Will definitely do it again although this year's trip is going to be two bolt rifles.

Hey, and one is even a "Scoped 375 H&H". Oh the humanity!! Michael will probably disown me as a friend.

2020

But actually, I'm not much of a "collector" in terms of having rifles in my safe that I don't use from time to time. I finally had that 416 Rigby repaired (trigger replacement) and have put it through its paces enough now to trust it again so it's going back for another trip across the pond this year. This is actually the reason I sold the 577NE. With the 500NE in the stable, I couldn't see taking any big bore double over to Africa other than it. IMO, and Sam I know you disagree, there is nothing gained by the 577NE over the 500NE except extra weight of the rifle, ammo, possibly a little recoil, and an unwieldy rifle in terms of physical size difference. The 500NE is the best combination (notice I didn't say compromise) of all factors involved.

For sure! Michael uses 375 rounds for primers on his big bores :-)

You aways have a solid plan! I've got the ammo and now need the darn rifle to arrive.

PM heading to you with a pic of the fox I shot today with the 450/400 using solids.

Looking forward to another awesome hunt with your spectacular hounds.

Todd, Just picking on you. The 500 will do it all and is lighter weight. I still love the 577.

Longrangehunter, I fully understand, I'm a Heym guy too. I have a 500 and 577 Heym so this is why my VC is for sale. The 500 probably won't go hunting because I truly love my 577.

I believe I previously wrote a short teaser about an initial prototype of the Heym .577 NE boxlock on my blog. As I recall, that rifle first debuted to the general public and was made available for shooting during the 2013 Heym Challenge. Those that shot the rifle, including myself, had great things to say about it. In fact I asked the factory to build one for me.

As you might already know, there are various versions of this rifle that Heym offers. I believe they are all offered on the Gross Box (large frame) action size. This is one of my favorite Heym boxlock frames for the .470 and up calibers. You should contact Chris Sells of Heym to obtain current pricing but I believe the .577 boxlock is available in Gross Box versions from the basic PH and Safari Grade models, with your preferred options, all the way up to the Special Model Mark Sullivan. You are probably aware but it is worth mentioning that Heym builds doubles on 5-different frame sizes (to scale caliber correctly to weight and to provide customers the choice of two frames in most calibers.)

The Mark Sullivan model incorporates various design features that are not offered in the base price of the previously mentioned models. These include things such as a special 1920s Holland & Holland stock design, especially designed pistol grip, extended top tang over the comb, extended bottom tang to the pistol grip, Silver & Company recoil pad, and various other differences.

I was considering posting a build thread as my Heym .577 moved through the factory. Perhaps there would be interest in such a thread.

Shawn
