Ok you DR nuts,

Loading is now going in the production phase.

Sat. will be "test-fire" day.

Who has good and simple plans / method for building a portable standing bench??

Got plenty of land, but need advice on a standing bench to sight-in my DRs. No major construction projects please!

All input appreciated (especially Southern Engineering techniques).

Thanks,

JW

I have a large photographic tripod (from a 4x5 monorail view camera) that I use as a standing rest. Is beefy. It has a 9" x 12" piece of 3/4" plywood fitted to the top as a platform.

It is used with two legs back and one to the front, allowing one to get as close to the platform as necessary.

Is relatively light, adjustable for height, and very portable. Got it cheap on eBay a few years ago.

Being 6' 5", I might have to get my truck lifted.

Jeff

I think it was Mac who pointed out before that Issue 13 Volume 4 of the Double Gun Journal has some pictures of a standing rest used by Rigby (?) for regulation and sight adjustment.

But if you are looking for "portable", good luck. More than a few of us have been on the lookout for a portable standing rest for some time. They have many versions of a portable sitting bench available out there, but really nothing in a standing rest.

The closest thing I ever found was a very expensive sniper rig that was not really ideal for a double. I'll try to dig up some research I did if you are interested.

Until someone makes one, it is shooting sticks, PVC, 2x4's and surveyors tripods.

Maybe a certain DRSS member with access to a machine shop will take pity on the anguished double rifle masses and provide a standing rest that is portable.

We can only hope....

Guys,

Don't make this too complicated. Try a five foot step ladder with an appropriately thick spacer to get the specific heigth you want to rest the back side of your leading hand. If you are particularly tall, you may need a six foot ladder possibly shortened a bit. The spacer should not have constriants that inhibit lateral recoil movement.Suggest you set up with the steps toward the target as the back is steeper and less likely to get in the way of your leading foot. Plus the "paint can" shelf is handy for ammunition, pencil/paper, etc.

The shelf on a 6' step ladder is about the perfect height for me.

I put a sand or lead shot bag on the shelf to rest my hand on and add some weight to steady the ladder a bit.

Cheap since I already have one, easy and portable. Even ambidextrous - turn it around for us left handed shooters.

Jeff,

This is from the guy you bought the warthog tusk/springbok horn coat rack from. Take a look at our shooting sticks....George Sandmann from Empire Rifles uses them so he does not get hammerred when siting in his big bores. They are now available in 7 different exotics and are extremely rigid with a take down connector milled on a cnc machine with 3 points of contact for strength. www.sportwc.com

Good Luck,

Jim
