I assume you have a 3" gun and only 3.25" dies available??? Obviously, a 1/4" isn't that much, but I'm not sure that the mouth of the case will be sized down enough to give you a good grip on the bullet by only pushing the case 3" inside the 3.25" die. In other words, I'm not sure at the 3" mark in a 3.25" die that any sizing is done on the case mouth. Follow me? bewildered

1) try it. It will either chamber and provide sufficient neck tension or it won't.

2) assuming these are the only dies you have avail, you could have a local machine shop turn 1/4" off of the bottom of the die, and I'm sure that would work.

Then again, after you've put all the time and effort into the exercise, you could probably have just bought a set of 3" dies.

Good luck.

I do not have a deifinite answer to your particular question, but a good person to contact may wel be Dave Davison at CH4D in the U.S he makes dies for most all of the big nitro rounds and he should be able to tell you straight off.

My own thought is that the dies if adjusted correctly would size the case neck with sufficient tension to hold a bullet, but the last 1/4 of case ahead of the rim would not be touched by the die, if expansion due to firing occured at this point, then you may not be able to rechamber re-loaded ammo in your own rifle, or worse eject re-loaded cases, which if used for dangerous game could cause a problem or two.

Best check with someone who knows, you could even drop RCBS an e-mail, they are usually extremely helpful with technical advice.

Thanks at all.
Yes, I have a P. Webley & Son in .500 - 3" but without the nitro proof and RCBS .500 31/4" dies. In other site (Nitro Express.com)I related the history of my gun and publicited somethings photos of the double.
Maybe the point Two of New Guy answer it's the solution.
Thanks other time.
