Removing Initials on Trigger Guard

I recently did some swapping and got replacement Chapuis. This one is a better fit, shoots like a champ, triggers are great and it will stay.
The problem is that a previous owner got his initials engraved on the trigger guard. I'm not a fan of this kind of thing. I've thought about doing something about this. I was thinking of getting them ground out, or maybe a weld fill and polish, or does somebody have any better idea. Any thoughts?

I can't blame you.

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

Any competent engraver should be able to engrave over them. I've used Jeff Flannery in the past.

A good smith with and a file can fix that mucho quick. They file it off and polish it out and re blue if needed, unless it is very deep engraving you'll never know it was there.

I agree! I don't want someone else's initials on my rifle with one exception. The only place someone else's initials are appropriate is on a collector piece that belonged to someone like Bell or Taylor. In that case it is provenance and increases the value of the rifle.

The engraving is an easy fix by simply soldering a little gold or silver oval cartouche over the initials, then re-black the trigger guard! This is much like the little brass ovals set in the bottom of the rear stock of most double rifles.

Any GOOD gun smith can do this work!

Where are the pictures? A required accessory, for me. I like to see things; I will get a better visualization of your problem. And I want to see your new rifle.

Hey Black Fly, It's great to hear you aquired another Chappy! I'm still hanging on to my 2nd Kodiak. We should try to get together when it warms up and burn some powder and catch up.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your guidance.

dpcd, here are a some pictures, any guidance is appreciated.

The rifle

The problem, as you can see, the engraving is pretty deep, at least it looks that way to me.

Randy, sounds great. It would be great to catch up, but we need to wait until the temps go up to two figures. Even though it's good for my ego to be able to walk on water, it would be more fun to shoot without getting frostbit.

Shootaway is pretty handy with a file. I'm sure he could clean it up for you. Wink

No problem.

Remove it, have the old filled with weld, BLACK IT, put it back on the rifle.

Or, more expensive, have an engrave engrave some sort of traditional pattern engraved over it. Just as is done with the Portuguese Crest, or similar, on the receiver ring on any military K98.

Since it is color cased, and matches the rest of the rifle, I would leave it as it is.

Spend the money to change it on more ammo.

Could you find out the history of the previous owner? Maybe after knowing about him ( or her!) you'd choose to keep it original??
