I have a H. Barella cape gun 16 ga/8X57 JR that has solid wood but someone long ago tried to freshen up the checkering and did too much damage on the very thin pistol grip.

I have a two piece stock blank that I would like to have cut to dup the original two piece stock. I can do the final fitting. The gun is a side lock exposed hammer gun that works fine just the way it is but needs to be fitted with new wood though the wood is solid now it just looks bad.

If anyone knows a duplicator I'd appreciate A contact Phone number or web-site !
Spelling corrected!

Yes, you are correct! I bought a new keyboard and it doesn't spell or avoid typos any better than the old one!

I clicked on your blog! It was very interesting! Too bad I don't read Finnish!

npd345 and I were just up at his shop last week. He has every step from $75 plain walnut to a green blank that was bargain priced at $1200.

Thanks for all the info posted here gentlemen!

I can drive to Bailey's shop which is only about 70 miles from my home, so I think I'll just head over there and talk to him, and take the cape gun with me so he can see what he thinks! If he will do it, then I think I'll just leave my stocks and blanks with him, and take the steel home!

Hey Mac,

Since the Stock is sound and solid, why don't you sand it totally down. Sand the area of the checkering a little deeper in order to remove it all. You will only be taking off a total of 1/8" to 3/16" from both sides together. Also you will be removing any scratches or dings (steam out) then refinish and checker it to your liking. Who knows you might end up with a nice peace of wood after all.

Best regards

Malek I would do just that, but the wrist of this stock is already too narrow, and the cretin who dug the checkering file in so deep that it will leave a sizable dish in the pistol grip before the botch is removed.

Additionally there are no scratches or gouges in the stock at all. The wood is fairly plain but solid. It is the original wood and the original checkering is worn smooth in straight grain wood typical of fine German guns.

The joker stopped when he destroyed the left side of the pistol grip, and I have been using the gun the way it is for over 20 years, and this little cape gun is little jewel, and deserves a stock that matches the quality of this piece!

Hi Mac:

understandably so if the stock is too narrow to start with. I kind of thought that you might have considered such an option as to sanding it and refinish it, but I figured in case you did not it is worth sharing the thought.

Good luck on the project, keep us posted. tu2
