Did not want to hijack the other thread so started this one. We are fortunate to have Kebco, Searcy, and New Guy here who represent Verney Carron, Searcy, and Heym doubles so I pose the question to them.

Which caliber leads in sales starting in 2009, 450 or 470?

You don't need either of those guys to tell you the answer to that question! The answer is the 470NE simply because so few doubles have neen made chambered for 450NE till local ammo was available for it. That has nothing to do with which is is better, because as Hog Killer said there isn't a nickel's difference between them in performance!

And if you add Merkel to the mix, it would definately be 470 by a long streak.

Mac,
I dont need them to answer, but am curious as to their opinion. And as far as ammo very available, this is why I asked for production numbers starting with 2009. Be interesting to see if the 450 generated a lot of initial interest since Hornady ammo was introduced and has held the interest. Or if a few souls (me included) bought a 450 only to see interest fading away to the 470.
My money says the 470 is still leading. But that is simply a guess on my part.
Last time I checked, Chapuis did not even offer a 450 so the 470 gets the edge there as well.

Well the post made me go look at the last two years. What I found was that there is no clear run away winner for the V-C guns. What I found was almost a perfectly even distribution (and probably no statistical difference) between numbers sold for the 450-400, 450, 470, and the 500. Also I do not have a clue what is sold outside the US. The 470 was the most popular caliber by a tiny number, followed very closely by the others.
I also do not think there is .05 cent difference between the performance of the 450 and 470, and both have some advantage over the other.

That is pretty surprising to me, I was sure it would be 470 by a landslide. I figured my next one would be a 470, but I have been losing sleep over the 450 on your web site!

No Rich, I don't think that is what he meant.

For me, the choice was between a 500 NE and anything between 450 to 470, as they are all effectively the same. The 500 is a definite step up and is said to perform with a distinctive difference on Ele, which is what I have on quota for next September. Kebco's comment is on the $$$. Big Grin

No, not combined. The number of individual guns sold in 450-400, 450, and 500 were almost the same as for the 470.

I would say that will always be the case for newly made double rifles. However in the ventage double rifles the 470NE will out number most others sold, simply because more were made in that chambering between the wars where the cream of the crop were made!

I have 450 and 470 both and if I had to live and hunt everything with three double rifles they would be a nice light, and lively 9.3X74R, or 375 H&H flanged, detach scoped, a 450NE 3 1/4", and a 500NE.for the lightest double here it would likely be the 9.3X74R simply because there are so many nice ones around, and they are relitively cheap to buy, and componants are more available than the 375 FL!
