top! Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. Do not be uneasy about me, for I am with my friends." ----- David Crockett in his last letter (to his children), January 9th, 1836 "I will never forsake Texas and her cause. I am her son." ----- Jose Antonio Navarro, from Mexican Prison in 1841 "for I have sworn upon the altar of god eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." Bottom because the grain flows consistently downward to the toe. Both beautiful, top would probably work fine too even with heavy calibers. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Bottom! | |||

I like the top one best for two reasons! #1 the grain is solid and straighter in the wrist area where strength is essential. #2 the marbling in the butt area shows a lot of honey, that contrasts very nicely with the marbling! I think the top one would make a much nicer final finish! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder however! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Mac Same reasons I chose the top one. The bottom one would still make a superb stock for a shotgun or Double, especially if you like darker stocks. Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

If it helps with the scale, the top blank is bigger than you would expect. It's @24" long.

Chris, you aren't going to be worng with either one of those. Both are great pieces. What is it going to be when finished? That might steer one in one direction or the other...... Is this a new Heym service BTW? Getting to pick your blank before it is a rifle? Master of Boats, Slayer of Beasts, Charmer of the fair sex, ...... and sometimes changer of the diaper.....

I would still go for the op one then. It's big enough that any concerns over grain can be left out. And it will make a striking pattern. Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

The top one appeals to me more because the grain seems to anticipate the pistol hand and is prettier towards the back end.

Neither. Both look more like custom bolt action rifle stocks than a double rifle stock. I would find something with nice straight grain, a modest amount of mineral streaking and then I would finish it with a liberal dose of alkenet. But that is just me. Mike

Old and Dense to make a stable stock that will not shift the POI.The choice of wood should be left to a skilled stock-maker(best that they are also a skilled shooter,IMO).

Why not choose both and build 2 guns???

Top one. The pattern on the bottom one lacks the contrast apparent in the first bit of timber. Both very nice of course but the top one would look simply superb I think.

They should have fashion skills too, engraved with time in knowing what type of stock to choose.Sometimes a certain layout can make a stock look weird,IMO.A wavy mineral line out of place can screw things up-just saying. That is how it should be like,IMO.If these skillful people exist or not is something else.

This one is going on a 470 that will be debuted in January at the shows. It's something quite special. The photos below aren't exact, but will give you a better idea of how the first blank could finish out. Density, age, pore size, etc... are all accounted for in these two blanks. We're looking at the aesthetics in this discussion. Which you think looks better.
