Found this pair NIB at Gander Mountain for $699 each. Since I can resist anything but temptation, they followed me home. Can't complain about the wood on either of them. The actions are stiff and the triggers are heavy and mushy but a little work should improve both. The 30-06 is putting plain old Remington Core Loks into a 2" square at 50 meters. The 45-70 is fine horizontally with trapdoor level loads but with about a 6" vertical spread so it may need a shim. They are both a blast to play with and I won't feel nearly as bad about getting a scratch on them in the swamp hog hunting as I do with my Chapuis.

I don't think I did the photo thing right. Right clicking on the image icon takes you to my Photobucket album.

The top one has nice wood and so much space below the chequering you could cut a flat there and add a grip cap. At the price you paid I would chance it.

Nice wood. Too bad they can't get a decent stock contour; it is almost as easy to make a good one as a bad one. If I could find another 06 for that price I would buy it and rip it apart to see about re-barreling.

Thanks for loading the photos Michael, it says I don't have permission to load photos; must be because I don't own anything with a hole in the muzzle bigger than 45 caliber! Smiler

Do a search for mp221 or Baikal double rifle and you will find them. Made in Russia out of surplus T72 tank parts. Imported by EAA. European American Armory.

They are interesting. In spite of the open profile grip, the 45-70 comes right to point when I shoulder it. The 30-06 not so much. Because the barrels are smaller in diameter at the muzzle on the 30-06 they couldn't use the exact same set of sights. Rather than make the front sight ramp taller they just filed the rear sight down until it only sticks up about 1/4 inch. You really have to snug down on the cheek piece to line up the sights. Russian engineering genius!
