I am going on a brown bear hunt on a boat in the ABC islands next spring. Michael458 is building me a .416 B and M with guncote for the trip. All weather gun etc. I love my VC 500NE with CEBs and was wondering if anyone knew a way to take a double to Alaska for a brown bear hunt without ruining it with Salt and weather. Are there covers we can use or a water proof case to carry it on the skiff and the stalk? please let me know your thoughts. would love to take it, but don't want to ruin it. Thanks

Suggestion, if it were me I would PM your question to Phil Shoemaker (458Win). If Phil does not have any good ideas, no one is likely to.

I don't think you'd be the first person to ever hunt brown bear with a double or other wood and blue rifle. Wax the stock and keep the metal oiled, you should be fine.

Beretta and a host of others make water proof soft cases for water fowl hunters that will fit your double rifle just fine. You can even get a water proof slip for carrying it off the boat.

Hope that helps.

Jeff Rann did it on one of the early episodes of Dangerous Game. I think he used a 500/416.

Phil is the expert but until he chimes in…

I hunt with a double here in AK, including a moose last September with a vintage .600. I keep the rifle in a soft fleece slip that is impregnated with oil an it, in turn, is in a waterproof and floatable soft rubber slip.

I rub down the rifle with paste wax before the hunt to seal the surfaces of wood and metal but also to seal the small gaps between the wood and metal. No problems in the past years, but Phil will do better than I here.
Cheers,
Cal

Mike: I have he .577 in hand and it's a nice looking double. Bores are near mint. I'll have it at the Palmer show in a month as my table will have a few double for sale.

Also, do you know your line at the end of your posts is VERY politically incorrect?

When I went brown bear hunting I bought a rubber gun slip made by Kolpin to use when in the skiff. It kept the salt spray off the rifle. I'm sure the Alaskan guys can tell you where to find them. George Caswell told me once he gives his double rifle a liberal coat of petroleum jelly on the metal particularly at the joints when hunting in the rain. That should work in your case as well.

I lived in Alaska a long time and hunted all over the state. I also spent quite a bit of time hunting brown bears along the coast.

I kept and still keep a shop rag saturated with Break Free CLP and rub my guns down at the end of every day. (after wiping all the water off them)

Handguns, DR's or any other guns, all get the same treatment and I never had any rust problems...

I used and like it on winter hunts too...

Cal, we don't need to understand USA:s political oddities but it seems that anyone there who owns any weapon will support Republican party.

This is the ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure thread. I saw a blued gun at the end of the day already mottled with rust as it was exposed to salt water that morning.

The paste wax works as does Barricade. Barricade sprays on, dries, and leaves a film. It can be worn off with handling and is not superior to paste wax.

Well,if you were one of the cool kids you would have one of Butch Searcy's ultra rare stainless steel double rifles with synthetic stock.

Problem solved

Shortly I will offer a .577 bpe double for sale in the classifieds. I can't think of a better double for bear. However, it is not stainless and synthetic!

The original was called the gun boat. It's basically a water proof river bag designed for a rifle. You can fit you're gun and soft case inside and it even floats.

Another option on a all weather double is jagdwaffen Fuchs in Innsbruck. He has made stainless doubles. Or you buy an inexpensive Merkel and just beat the heck out of it like mine.
