Can a DR be fitted for a sling? What about using one of those slings designed for shotguns without swivels? They have loops for barrels and stock. Oxon Oxon

Certainly a DR can be fitted with a sling, the question is should a DR be fittted with a sling. Elephant Hunter, Double Rifle Shooter Society, NRA Lifetime Member, Ten Safaris, in RSA, Namibia, Zimbabwe

Yes, they work. But I don't use them, I just carry the gun on one hand or Safari style on my shoulder until I see game and then it is 2 handed diagonal across my body. (That's hunting situations)

I have owned several double rifles, drillings, and cape guns, and I can't remember even one of them that didn't have sling swivels from the maker. I Always have a sling available for my doubles, if needed, but rarely use one when getting close to game. The sling is usually used for long tracking treks, and return to the Bakki after the shots are made, or for climbing a steep hills where both hands are needed. Mine are canvas with Quick detach loops so it can be installed, or removed quickly. One thing you should never do is "wrap up" in a sling for steady shooting. The double rifle must be absolutely allowed to recoil normally or it will not regulate. The sling on a double rifle is for only one purpose to carry the rifle, not as a shooting aid. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

That may not be the query. You can fit an automobile, a horse's ass or a camel to a DR but that is also irrelevant. Oxon Oxon

I have found slings to be very useful on long treks - both shotgun and rifle. I am aware of the sensitivity of the DR barrel to such things which is why I asked. Rather than re-invent the wheel I thought it might be interesting to learn what others have done along this line. Oxon My new Chapuis 9.3x74 does not have swivels, although it has a screw hear on the lower rib partway down. Oxon

"Almost all" vintage rifles are equiped for a sling. Many newer ones too. But some are not. A barrel rib mounted stud or eye is typical, and can be retro fitted. Might require reblacking the barrels. A butt mounted eye is easy stuff. Early rifle have eyes intended for hooks or leather thongs attached to the sling. But fitting a Michaels compatible stud makes more sense these days. I usually use a sling on my Continental doubles, but can't stand the sight of one on my vintage British doubles. On my British doubles I tie a small leather os cord loop to the barrel swivel. With this I can raise and lower the guns from the elevated stands from which I usually hunt. It's purely an esthetic thing for me. Must carry the old stuff on my right shoulder, muzzles forward. I use a USGI General Purpose Strap. These are the 2 inch cotton version from the 50s-70s, I modified the ends with quick release swivels. To make a "tropical" sling. Cost $4 Reason the sling can be shot without getting in the way as it is so thin. Also rolls up in 1/4 of the space of a leather one so I always have a few handy. It is wide so after 10 miles you think this is the best deal in the hunting world. And usually most people in the camp agree after a hard day. If it snags I cut it and have cut a few in the past few years. Which reminds me to get more.

Texas Hunt Co makes a nice sling with suspension, it really helps with carrying anything over 12 lbs
