I sit here wondering, if a bunch of money fell into your lap [in GA,Fl, SC], what set up would you go and get. Im thinking a 28G double over a 30.06 would really work during bird season in case we walked up on a deer or hog on the way to the field. As a straight double rifle, it would be hard to beat a 30.06 on both

I like the way you think. Maybe a double 35 Whelan instead of 30-06 or maybe a 303. Elephant Hunter, Double Rifle Shooter Society, NRA Lifetime Member, Ten Safaris, in RSA, Namibia, Zimbabwe

I do a lot of hunting with Drillings and Double rifle drillings. I use them a lot in Texas and in the fall on bear hunts to Idaho and Montana, when mountain grouse are in season. A 9,3x74R,/9,3x74R/20gs works real good. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

For the eastern US, it would be hard to beat a 45-70. Deer & Hogs in the woods, a double would work just fine there. Did someone say "sabatti"? I have never had a drilling, they are intriguing though.

That would be a good choice. I use a 2 barreled set in Texas, a Drilling and an extra set of barrels in a double rifle drilling, both sets use the 308 and the 20 ga. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Since most combo guns are European in origin, it is hard to fine a 45/70... I do like the 45/70, but after using both, the 9,3x74R is superior in most every way. I have taken cape buff and elephant with the 9,3x74R as well as game to 300 yards. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

The 30-06 12 ga combo mentioned is good I have a Sauer drilling I like a lot, Throw in a .22 hornet or LR einstucklauf in one of the shot barrels and you have a true all around hunting gun. The problem with a perfect gun once you have it is that we get bored and still keep trying to make it better. I have a 8x57jr 16, 16 ga drilling I like even better than the 06. The 16 ga frame makes a more compact gun, The rimmed case is nice for those who belive a kipplauf type gun is destin to have extracton problems and the 8x57 is such a classic caliber for a classic gun. I think the 8x57 is pritty close to perfect I would guess thats why so many of the vintage drillings were chambered for it. If most of my hunting was going to be big game with only occasional small game then a 9.x74,9.3x74 x 20ga double rifle drilling would be really hard to beat. DRSS NRA life AK Master Guide 124

N E 450 No2 I was referring to the double in the thread's title. I think a double 45-70 would be dandy for the SE. I agree that you would probably not be able to find one in a drilling, but you might be able to find a 303. 303 and 12 or 16 ga would be nice. TerryR

I'd call Mike Stewart. mdstewart on AR. His shop in Chattanooga is full of fine offerings from double rifles and drillings to high end scatter guns and accessories. It really is a showplace and worth the trip even if you don't spend a penny. Will J. Parks, III

How about a Sauer sidelock 12x12x9.3x74 (70mm for the shotshells) with a set trigger for the rifle and claw mounts for quickly using the shotgun barrels? The gun below will group factory 232 grain bullets (2500 fps +) into 1.5" at 100 yards (if you let the barrel cool) and has killed several deer at more than 150 yards and a good boar at a bit further. It was made in the 50's, has 1/2 and full choke in the shotgun barrels and is proofed for express loads. It weighs only 7 pounds without the scope and I usually can hit 18 or better in a round of skeet using AA #8's at the shooting club (and I ain't no clay pigeon shooter and often miss the second of the doubles). It'll put five+ 0 buck (Remington Express) in a paper plate at 35 yards with the right barrel and about the same with the left. I never shoot magnum loads with it (even for for turkeys), but it patterns high brass #6's well enough that I'd feel confident shooting a turkey in the head/neck at 30 yards and I'd always be ready for a wild hog with the 9.3x74 that made the mistake of being around when I gave up on the gobblers. The question wasn't about African game, but without much load work up, it shoots 250 grain Nosler accubonds well enough that I'd not hesitate to shoot any PG with it. While I'm at it, I really ought to try Wooodleigh 286 grain solids in case any elephants got loose at my hunt club, I reckon. I kind of think it fits what you suggest perfectly. It is the best "all around" gun that I've ever seen and it took me searching for 10 years to find it. TerryR Sabatti does make O-U combo's but as far as I know they are not imported to the U.S.I have seen them in Canada for about $1500 Can.,they come in flange calibers. CZ imports a O-U combo but no flanged calibers are imported to the U.S.
