I stopped in at Champlins, while visiting my Enid store yesterday. George was gone to the Tulsa Gun Show this weekend, and had taken many guns with him. I was pondering over a few I was interested in...(There were still 100's of fine guns left behind), when I spotted one on the rack, I hadn't seen before. An H&H 475#2 sidelock!!! It was fantastic...with bores like new, fine engraving at 95% with oriental looking dragons surrounded by "Fleur de leis"(spelling). Barrels looked to be around 24", It had a large beavertail forend, which I am not a big fan of, but I could overlook that. This gun is not listed on the web site, as many are not, but it hasn't been there long, as I would have seen it.

I wonder if George would trade straight across, for my Searcy? hilbily beer rotflmo

Just thought I would post because you don't see this caliber very often, and this one was super nice!!!

George has it up on his site in the "Gun Vault"...$58,950. If you buy it (???), Dave Powell has 475 NE #2 ammo for sale....you're all set!

Biebs,
I think you saw the H&H 500/465, on Champlins site. It is very similar, but the 475NE#2 has a full beavertail forarm...looks like the one on a Chapuis. It also has nicer wood than the than the 500/465.
George has 5-6 H&H doubles that I would love to own, but I can't play at that level until my kids get through school.
Dave Powell is a fine gentleman! I purchased some 450NE#2 dies and brass from him, a few years ago. He threw in a few 475NE#2 brass...probably got them mixed in by accident. They all look like Bananas sticking out of a culling belt. shocker

George may post pictures of the 475#2, when he gets time. The web page only shows a small % of the guns in stock. You should stop by there sometime, as I have seen by your collection, that you are one who appreciates these fine guns.

Dave, You're right...I remembered seeing an H&H in an odd caliber...I was thinking 475 #2.
You're right about Dave Powell...first class guy, and a wealth of knowledge about DRs for BP, Cordite, BP for Nitro, etc. His website, Gunsinternational.com, is a great place to find to find higher-end and unusual firearms.

Friend of mine owns a Jeffery double chambered in 475#2 Jeffery (.488). What a killer! Just on the cuff of what I like in recoil it is a great NE round! I think the rifle you are looking at is a .483 caliber.

I stopped at Champlin's a couple of years ago & spent a few hours looking at & handling
some beautiful doubles. It's a great place to shoulder dozens of doubles to see what fits you
best. I believe they even had the H&H double that Redford used in "Out of Africa"

The H&H 500/465 they have listed on the website has already sold. Would love to see
pics of the 475 #2. It seems that there is still a market for high quality doubles

It is at Woodring Airport, just a few miles east of Enid.

Jungleboy,
The "Out of Africa" gun is still there. I have handled it many times. The movie factor means little to me, but the gun is a treasure to behold...has a pop-up peep sight recessed into the tang, just in front of the safety...Way cool!!!

Urodoji,
If you have watched this forum much, you have seen reference to "JJ" as one of the top "Gunmakers" (he doesn't like to be called a "smith")... He owns the service business at Champlin Arms.

George Caswell claims to have handled over 15,000 double rifles and shotguns, in the past 40 years. He is truely one of the most experienced doublegun men on the planet. Anyone with a love for these fine arms, should not miss a chance to visit the vault at Champlins.

Even though I have no affiliation, I can't help "tooting their horn"...the past 30 years of salesman in me shows through...

The place has lots of "good stuff"; [to quote George]
well worth having if you can put up the money for it.
It's just that simple...

Just remember to allow yourself plenty of time to gawk at all the rifles JJ's shop as you walk over to George's side. Visiting with JJ and George is worth the trip.

Although the topic H&H is out of my reach, I do have my next DR picked out at Champlins. I am hoping to get it in February, with the help of some tax money...that is if Obama doesn't "kick me in the groin" on my return. I am trying to save enough to cover most of it. It's a secret rifle, thats not on the web site...He-He...
I will post pictures If I get this done.
