450/400 3" vs. 3 1/4"

Can a 3.25" gun shoot 3" shells? Is 3.25" brass readily available? (Hornady's making 3" correct?)

MJinesBrad,
Can only help with part of your question. They are not interchangeable. Rim thickness is different, and there are other differences in the cartridge dimensions too.
Thanks for the care package.

465H&HDo a search as this subject was covered here 3 or 4 weeks ago. In a nut shell, a 3" cartridge will not chamber in a 3 1/4" chamber as the case has it's shoulder well forward of the 3 1/4". I have fired (by mistake) 3 1/4" shells in a Jeffery 3" double rifle. Although the 3" uses the thick rim instead of the thin rim found on the 3 1/4" the firing pin was long enough fire the cartridges. I was able to keep 10 of them on a foam cup ay 35 yards.

When Hornaday brings out their 450NE 3 1/4" brass (announced for this summer, iirc) you should be able to make 450/400NE 3 1/4" cases easily.

But Hornady is supposedly bringing out the 3 1/4" cases too, at some point.

I hope at some point they will make some 375 H&H flanged brass! If brass & ammo were available for this round, I predict it would be chambered in many doubles shortly, and would be one of the best sellers yet!

400 Nitro ExpressA couple of weeks ago, I asked Hornady when the .450/.400 3 1/4" cases would be available. They said they should be available by summer.

The 3" case is a good bit shorter than the 3 1/4", but the re-forming may lengthen the 3" case more than enough! The rim thickness may be a problem, however! The 3" version has a much thicker rim than the 3 1/4", so head space will have to be adjusted by thinning the rim from the front/muzzle side! Lot of trouble, but it will likely save some money in the long run.

Thank you Peter, and Ray! I had an A&N double rifle, chambered for 375 H&H flanged yrs ago, and traded it because I couldn't get ammo or componant brass for it. Now I wish I still had that rifle! I have a double now that I may have JJ make bme a set of 375 H&H flanged barrels for!
