Shooting my new Chapuis

Got out this weekend to get some ammo through my new 470NE DR. It was a real hoot and I was pleasantly surprised with both the accuracy and regulation of the rifle.

I shot the right barrel first and it did fine. Then I put the empty in the left side and fired the right barrel again. Snapped on the fired cartridge next to make sure I was not double tapping.

Then I loaded two cartridges and shot right first, then left. Next shot left first and then right. No double tapping and no problems of any kind. When shooting from a solid rest I was able to maintain minute of orange accuracy at twenty-five yards.

My only concern, if you can call it that, was the trigger pull. Seems like it was extremely heavy. I am assuming this to be a DR characteristic to avoid double tapping. Is that a true statement. Can the triggers be lightened or should I stay with the factory settings?

Doc, they can be lightened much like any trigger, but you may want them a bit heavier than you may like your bolt guns.

Eyedoc,

Heavy triggers seem to be common in Chapuis DRs. On a recommendation from Dale Nygaard, I sent my Chapuis to Laibs Gunsmithing in Spicer, Minnesota. The triggers are much better now. BTW, my Merkel didn't need a trigger job, but the Chapuis is better looking.

Heavy triggers are NOT a common issue on D.R.'s. But I've heard that Chapuis is horrible in that respect. My Searcy's have all come with very nice usable light triggers.

Shot my new Chapuis 470 this weekend as well. Shot it with Hornadys, and it didn't regulate too well. Triggers did seem a bit heavy, I'll agree.

Eyedoc, what ammo were you shooting.

When my Chapuis 470 was new, the triggers were a bit heavy and the action of the safety was not as crisp as one would like. JJ recommended puting about 100 rounds thru it before doing any tuning, which he does not charge for if you purchase the gun from him. The gun shoots great tho.

Thanks. Maybe I'll try the Hornadys again. I was only getting about 5 inch spread at 50 yards, which seemed a bit much - though I was shooting open sights so it certainly could have been me and not the gun.
