Please post your load data for 400 grain bullets and Jamison brass. Have a large supply of Hornady DGX and some DGS as well.

Rifle is due in any day and would like to hit the range running so any starting loads would be apreciated.

Snowwolfe:
I've been shooting the same load in my .450-400 Harrison and Hussey ble for 15 years: 80 Grains of IMR 4831 and a 400-grain Woodleigh soft point. For Woodleigh solids I use 78 grains. My rifle has taken bear, caribou, lion, leopard, hippo, sable, croc, and dozens of plains game. My rifle was proofed for 55 grains of cordite so you may go up to 83 grains if your rifle was made for 60 grains or cordite.
Good shooting.

My 450-400 3 1/4 (should be close in approximate loading data) eats 71.4 of RL 15 which approximates the Kynoch loads. I'm getting 2110 fps with this load and the Hornady's using Jamison.

82 grs. of IMR-4831 has been my choice load in the 5 or 6 450-400-3" and 450-40003.25 I have owned..I have used this load with most of the available brass including Jamison. RL-15 has been a distant second choice for me, but use the one that shoots best.

Here are some alternatives to consider.
Find what your rifle likes the best. Its so much fun to experiment
For practice
78 gr H 4831 SC and 400 gr. Woodies or DGX
66 gr RL#15 with foam backer rod filler and
Woodies or DGX 400 gr.
Always use Fed 215 primers in the large cases.

For DG my K-gun likes the new bore rider 400 gr. soft nose from North Fork cause the same load can be used with the bore rider Cup Point Solids or Flat point solids and shoot to the same point of impact once you find your load. The North Forks are more expensive but the best
consistant performance and miles of penetration.

My load for the NFs is 78 1/2 gr H 4831 SC with Fed. 215 M primers. The rifle regulates at one inch with speed running about 2025 fps. Recoil is mild. Practice loads with RL#15 seem to kick less. Don't worry about speed so much as the regulation at the distance you want to shoot. I test at 60 meters over an Ohler 35 P chronograph.

PS The Buffalo doesn't know how fast the bullet is going especially if he is well hit and dead.

Good Shooting and Good Hunting

No buff will be shot. My doubles will only be used on Alaskan animals, mostly moose and bears. Eventually I plan on using cast bullets for busting rocks and snowshoe haresSmiler.

Thanks for all the info. Will start with 80 and 82 grains of IMR 4831, Fed 215M, Jamison brass, and Hornady 400 gr DGX.

Crimp or not?

Hornady factory ammo is crimped. You can duplicate this by ordering a Lee Factory Crimp Die. Roll crimping with the standard dies may shorten case life due to required trimming.

I don't crimp any of my 450/400 cases and have
very good case life.

Good Shooting
