That's my story and I am sticking to it. I just picked up my new Merkel 140 in 470.When he open up his only box of ammo and showed me how big the round was I almost ran from the store!!!
I passed on the factory at 240 a box, so I will have to wait on dies and shell ect. I will order tomarrow. I think I will fit a good recoil pad to it before I shoot it. There will be a 100 questions comeing on load developement and such.

J D,

Yup ... they did it to me too ;>Wink You're now in real danger.

Mine was a Field Grade Searcy in .470 NE. Then I found out what lovely hunting arms DRs really are and bought another. That time it was a scoped 9,3x74R Chapuis w a set of 20 gauge barrels.

Now I attend meetings every week and try not to read this forum very often.

Welcome aboard. I love my Merkel...and reloading is the only way to afford to shoot it.

Hi Mike
When are the meetings. I almost did the 9x3-20 ga set up , but I already have a tika o/u double rifle with 12 ga barrel set. I may up grade from the tika later if I like the SXS better. I have a buddy who has one, He does not like the stock set up for shotgun work. How does yours fit you. I am thinking of getting a merkel 20 ga shotgun. I like the tika ,the scope mount system is great. It was half of what a chapuis set would cost. If my wife or daughter is dragging me on a vacation, I just throw it in the car and not worry about it. It shoots real well with eiyher set up.

J D,

I should warn you that for some reason I've never been a good wing shot. Started with Remington pumps and autos and eventually got a Citori ... which I love but never shot well.

A couple of years ago I was invited to spend a half day phesant/chukkar/quail hunt over dogs with a family hunting party at the Rio Brazos Ranch. Took the Chapuis as I was also going to hunt pigs later in the trip. Made a nice package for such a trip.

First time I had used the Chapuis as a shotgun.

I'll remember the day the rest of my life. Was absolutely fabulous. I hit more than 50 birds with very few misses. If they're lucky, every dog has his day ... and that one was mine. Just could not miss.

The SxS sighting plane works for me, and the choking of the barrels seems to pattern the shot well at all ranges (even out to the stunningly long!).

The cost of the Chapuis was worth it for that one day alone!!! clap

When you reload, try H4831 and also RX 15 with filler. when you decide which you like better, buy 10# of powder with same lot #.

I shoot cast bullets and also 400 gr Hornady pistol bullets for practice.
