Next Alaska Double Shoot
05 October 2015, 02:48
cal pappasNext Alaska Double Shoot
Many of you out-of-state flatlanders have requested more lead time for our double shoots up here in Alaska so you can plan to visit us.
The first shoot of 2016 will be Saturday, May 7th, at the Birchwood range. 10am. At that shoot we will determine our July date.
I hope this is early enough for you all.
Cheers, mates.
Cal
PS:
Expect 40-50 double rifles, .350 to 4-bore.
Can't guarantee the weather--last year in the 70s, year prior it was snowing.
Lunch will be served--burgers and dogs on the grill.
Biebs will bring his Blaser.
Shootaway will bring his knowledge and the best double ever made.
Janet Reno will serve drinks in a topless thong.

At least she's in the same species as the rest of us.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

That would depend on how much Scotch you bring with. Takes a thirty year mortgage to buy it here any more.that said, as the young Lad Brett mentioned I'm sure we can find something like a bottle or two of Dalwhine and Quinta Ruban.
If you need a place to stay we have room for you.

.470:
Thanks for your post and I hope to see you up here! My 4-bore is an old Hughes and not as fancy as the one that just sold at auction. Not only am I happy with the one I have but I am saving my pennies in the slim chance Shootaway decides to sell his double which is the finest rifle on the planet. If Shootaway owns and shoots it, it is my dream!
My Hughes can shoot a ball or a conical with equal accuracy with Blue Dot or FFg GOEX. With the ball of 1400 grains (actually a 5-bore by bore size) with 120 grains of Blue Dot pushes the ball at 1700+ fps. 390-grains of FFg is good accuracy but if pushed to 440 grains (one ounce of powder) accuracy suffers. And, with ball and 440 grains recoil is stiff and with a conical of 1900 grains+ accuracy is unbearable. Come on up and shoot some!
See you in May.

In early May you will have 16-18 hours of daylight. The salmon won't be in but steelhead and others are in the rivers and pike in the ponds and lakes in my area. I will be working M-F filling in at the local school for a terminally ill teacher, but you are welcome to stay at my place to avoid hotel costs and fish and tour from there.
Weather should be warm and sunny. On a low snow year the snow will be melted but if it's a heavy snow year there will be some snow on the ground. If sunny--temps in the 70s days, 45-50 nights. If it is rainy days are in the 40s and if it snows days in the 20s. Weather is a crap shoot.
Cal
PS. I will bring the following:
BPE: .450 and .500
BORE: 12, 8, 4
NE: .350, .400, .450, .500 .600.
maybe more as I'm working on a couple of deals now.

cal pappasI'm pleased I posted early and I'll occasionally bump this to the top to keep it alive so mates don't forget. Should be a great shoot.
For the out of staters coming, if you give us advance notice many of us in the city can assist with your plans. I may have one gent staying at my home, but until it is confirmed, I have a place for one or two. My only difficulty is I live 100 miles from Anchorage and this year have a full time job. So anyone who stays with me would have to rent a car and drive up.
Lots of time to plan and think. All are welcome.

cal pappasTo Phil and a few others, I'm sorry the date won't work for you. Other dates won't work for others and it's impossible to find a day and date combination that will work for everyone so I just randomly picked a date. In the past I tried to email with thoughts and requests and I got such a jumble of days and dates the only way to please everyone was to have a month of shoots.
At the May shoot we will all pick a date for the second shoot and I will post it here and my website and send out some emails. I may miss that one if I continue with a planned hunt overseas.
Cheers all.

cal pappasHi Men:
A few months out and a reminder of the Alaska shoot for double rifles is May 7, 10am, at the Birchwood range. The range charges 20$ each to shoot and I will take a collection for Rob who fronted the $250 reservation fee. As time gets closer I will email the locals for food items to bring. Flatlanders from the Lower 48 are welcome.
Any questions? PM or email me at <pappas@mtaonline.net>
I will bring 12-, 8-, 4-bores, .350, .400, .450, .500, .600 nitro and a few black powder express doubles, also. Last year we had about 50 fine double rifles and more are expected this year.
Should be fun.

FrostbitBump as a reminder. May 7th is fast approaching. We have been assigned hotdogs so we will bring some Moose dogs and Jalapeno cheese dogs from Joyce's Valley Cow.
My 1902 Army Navy .450 3 1/4 will be there with ammo for whoever wishes to shoot it.
Cheers
Jim

Omnivorous_BobI've already started loading ammo-will have 8, 10, 25-20, 30-06, and 318 doubles, a 4-bore single, 577 howdah, plus a few subguns for variety's sake.
Just a small note on Cal's post above, since we've got the range rented it is free to everyone to shoot on that range. Only if you want to shoot on another one do you have to pay the normal $20 nonmember fee, so there's no reason not to come on out.

"PS. To add a bit of Pappasonian philosophy: this single barrel stuff is just a passing fad. Bolt actions and single shots will fade away as did disco, the hula hoop, and bell-bottomed pants. Doubles will rule the world!"
