I owned a Merkel 470. It did not fit me well and I never was comfortable shooting it. I sold it and bought a Searcy 470.

The Searcy fits me perfectly because it was made for me. That fit has been very handy a couple times when I had to make a quick shot in very poor light.

If you absolutely had to have one for a safari in the coming year the Merkel could be your best choice. Otherwise, I would wait to get the custom fit rifle even if it took two years.

Like Palmer says if you need the rifle NOW, then the Merkel is the ticket! If you can wait, then the Searcy can't be beat for the price, and what you get for that price. The only draw back is the wait!

If you can swing the price for the Merkel, and the 50% deposit on the Searcy, then buy the Merkel, use it while waiting for the Searcy, and sell it when it is time to pick up the Searcy, to pay the other 50% !
I have a Merkel 470NE, and luckily it fits me well, and is super accurate, and I bought it used, but as new with a lot of accesseries, and factory ammo, at a real bargain. I may do as I reccomend, place an order for a Searcy, and continue to use my Merkel till the Searcy is finished! There is a Searcy PH 500NE for $9000 at Cabela's in PA, that looks very good, if that interests you! beer

If you were to order a Searcy, what calibre would it be?

I have a Merkel 500NE. It fits me like a glove but I have been lucky. The Searcy guns are true custom, they are a step above Merkel in price but you get what you pay for. The Merkel was at the top of my price range and I got a steal of a deal on it. If I had the money I would give it to Butch.

personal opinion: buy a Chapuis for $4500-6000 (see group buy)and put a deposit on a Searcy...tailored to fit. When the Searcy arrives, sell ME the Chapuis and make both of us very happy!

It would be hard to keep me from ordering a 450/400NE 3", because I had to sell the last one I had, and still miss it badly! However, I might get a 450NE 3 1/4", because of the availability of good .458 bullets, and I don't think the 470NE will do anything better than the 450NE, and the 450NE is a more shooter friendly chambering that can be made lighter than the 470NE or 500NE! Confused

I have a 450 3 1/4 at 11lbs 3oz. I wonder, how does the recoil of the 500NE at 1lb 4oz compare to 450? I realize that stock fit is important but I'm looking for a general comparison. The stock on my 450 is about 1/4 inch too short but the recoil is certainly bearable. That Searcy 15" is probably what the doctor ordered.

I looked at all the doubles before ordering a Searcy in 450 NE. Like was mentioned before it is a little friendlier than the 470 or 500. Brass is not a problem. Jamison is producing brass from the old bell equipment.

Welcomed to AR.

The 450 bore is my favorite double rifle calibre, I shoot a 450 No2.

Do you have your 450 Searcy?
If so what loads are you shooting in it?

Have you tried the 350 gr Hornady. Are you aware of my 75% Rule?

Not yet have to wait till August for it to be delivered. Have corresponded with Phil Lazano who also shoots the 450 and he has given me some loads. Have purchased woodleighs, 480 grains, have powder in Reloader 15 and H4831 along with IMR 4831 for reloading. Purchased 200 cases. Getting ready and will shoot it frequently after I get it. Of course looking forward to it. Plan on using it for buffalo and elephant in Tanzania in 2009. Haven't heard of the 3/4 principle yet. Hope you will give me some insite. I have learned a great deal from the discussions on the African chat sites.

I like RL 15 powder best, with filler of course. Either dacron [pillow stuffing you can get at the craft/sewing store] or foam that I cut out with a sharpened with a chamfer tool 50 BMG case.
I like foam best.Once you get the proper load with the 480 Woodleighs, load the 350 Hornadays with the same powder charge. You might have to go up or down a grain or two to get perfect regulation but in several doubles the exact same charge will work.

The 350 gr is about 75% the weight fo the 480's thus the name The 75% Rule.

It works with 300gr bullets in the 450/400, and 350gr bullets in the 470 as well.

I called to buy it, but it was sold on Saturday.

What should someone be paying for the basic model Merkel in .500NE?

If you shop around, you can probably find one new for $8500 or lower.

There are two different pricelines on Merkel and Chapuis double rifles.

The doubles up to and including the 9,3x74R are quite a bit cheaper that the 375 and up doubles.

Usually you can get a new 470 Merkel for less than you can get a new 470 Chapuis.
