Hi Guys: Ok I got all my reloading supplies for the 470 NE ordered. I picked up a pack of 100% Resin Treated White Polyester Fiber.... I didn't see the name Dacron on any of the bonded batting. But I presume this is the same thing? I could not find the wads anywhere. Trader Keith has some coming in but not here yet. How much measured in what weight do I stick into the 470 shells? Do I measure it in grains on my powder measure scale? Or just fill up the space? Thanks... Jim P. I used 3 grains and stuffed it in with a pencil with RL15. Switched to H4831SC and no longer use the filler.

When I was loading 470 I actually weighed the Dacron in grains on my powder scale. I would do a bunch of Dacron charges and just keep them seperate in small balls. Wasn't any trouble and shot remarkably accurate in my Merkel. I think I used 6.5 grains of Dacron finally as what was required of the load I was using which was Reloader 15. This pretty much packed the powder to where it did not shake at all. Only thing disconcerting is the ball of fluff that you get when you shoot. I think if I were still shooting a 470 I would get the wads. SCI Life Member NRA Patron Life Member DRSS

Jim, The dacron is around 3 grs or so.. The dacron will come up the neck slightly and your bullet seating will compress is slightly against the podwer a packed charge and not a compressed charge... Also loading 87grs of RL 15... Mike Mike

PAHunter: Initially, I weighed all of the dacron filler, but after awhile you get a visual understanding of how much 3 grains (or so) is. Becareful with this, though. In the past, I have put too much in, and, when seating bullets, I actually bulged the case. Bad ju-ju. As Retreever said, you want just enough to keep the powder in place, but not so much to compress the powder in the case, or way too much to bulge the brass case. 577NitroExpress Double Rifle Shooters Society Francotte .470 Nitro Express If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming...

The FILLER either poly or foan should be compressed between the bullet and the powder. Does not have to be compressed with a 2 ton press, you just do not want "handling" to compress the filler more. This ensures that after carrying the loaded ammo traveling, handling, hunting, and most important after shooting one barrel, you cannot hear the powder when you shake the case. Filler and airspace in the case can caused a ringed or buldged chamber. If you hold a loaded round in one hand and bang the bullet end in the palm of your other hand, rather briskly, 10 times or so and you cannot hear any airspace in the case, ie. powder movement, then you should have enough filler in the case.
