Looks like a very nice 470 at Collector's Firearms in Houston. Webley action, ejectors, nice engraving. It's a twin to my Evans except mine has a qtr rib. Hope someone needs one. Smiler

I'll see if I can't arrange a BobC, 400 Nitro Express, and my own self, converging on Collectors tomorrow?

Looks decent in the pictures, but weems to me a rather high asking price and a big premium for .470 cal. Just my observation and I could well be missing something.

I went and looked at it during lunch.

Very clean and appears to be well taken care of - just a few minor dings in the wood stock behind the rear swivel. Action felt smooth, but tight and appeared to be on-face. I'm no expert here, but the rear of the barrel's were flush with the action (no day-light) and I couldn't feel any lateral movement.
There are two targets with the rifle both shot at 50yds with softs and solids seemed like accuracey was OK. There is a aluminum travel case (nothing special, but it looked sturdy).

The gun is on consignment and who ever is selling it does not live in Houston.

I asked for a cash price - said they would take $24k. It is a nice gun, but I'm not sure what it is worth. Collector's generally prices their used gun on the upper end of the price scale (plus a little).

Beautiful rifle, very nicely redone. 28" barrels. Ejectors. Super nice in all respects except the bores. Significant Cordite erosion in both barrels. Was shot with corrosive ammo on a few occasions without being properly flushed out with water, and the bores are somewhat pitted. On the poor/fair/good/very good/excellent scale, I'd say they're fair to good.

I think it's overpriced by $10,000.

I saw it around 11 AM today. Nice, I thought the bores were a bit frosted as they usually are. It was beautiful, but not $24K beautiful.

28" barrels that seemed very slim for a 470.

This gun was built for Army & Navy by Webley, and Webley's number is stamped on the left side of the fore-end loop. It's Webley's A & W C Model, probably 2nd quality - among the very best boxlock British double rifles ever made. The 1st quality had slightly more engraving coverage, but this one still has intercepting sears. The refurbish really is very well done. It's one of the prettiest Webley Screw Grips I've seen in recent years. If it had excellent bores, the price would be in the ball park. It doesn't.

Is the engraving the only difference between an A & W C 1st and 2nd? Are the internals the same? etc? Is there any way to tell right away between a 1st and 2nd?

With respect to those that Webley built for the trade complete, like this A & N, yes. The exception of the Baker extended top tang comes to mind though. The 1st quality model was illustrated in the Webley catalogs with it, but was rarely actually built with it. With respect to those provided to the trade as proven barreled actions in the white (which, contrary to popular myth, aren't very common) and stocked and finished by the retailers, the difference can be harder to judge.

Yes, the difference is embellishment only. The 1st and 2nd quality A & W models have intercepting sears. The lower grades do not, but are otherwise still the same gun. 470evans' (above) William Evans .470 is identical to this A & N, except that it has a quarter rib and does not have intercepting sears. Otherwise, even the engraving pattern is the same.

Engraving, and the rare extended top tang.
