I am sitting home waiting for this storm to pass. I am a 30 minute walk down the levee from the New Orleans Zoo. I don't have any solids loaded. Will my 470 loaded with 500 gr cup points do the job in a pinch? More importantly would you recommend gumbo or jambalaya. JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

Am in Houston watching the development of the storm track. Am an old Floridian and saw a couple of three storms up close and personal ... moving less abled folks to shelter. Saw Tampa Bay literally dry due to a fortunate land fall at low tide and the wind going out to sea. If'n I were you guys, I load the doubles into the car and get the hell out of Dodge. I wanted to leave two days ago, wife wants to stick it out. It is a mad house leaving now. My home sits on highest point of land in the area, we are less than 100 yards from the Mississippi levee. I got the mudboat hooked to the car, a 308 bushmaster and 1000 rounds of ammo 6 case of MRE. I am good for a couple of weeks if need be. Thanks for the well wishes. As it stands right now looking at models New Orleans is going to get pounded with rain. If the high pressures that are steering this storm over the atlantic and southeastern USA shifts to the east then New Orleans will get hit harder or bear the brunt of the storm. Check this place out CROWN WEATHER These folks compile a lot of data. Scroll down the Gustav page and take a look as the track models. Take your rifles and your wife and go now! JD, I am sitting here in Houma, we started to go to our house in English Turn, but we don't have any furniture in it. We started to leave here and go to Houstom last night and then again this AM but didn't go. The storm is not as strong as was anticipated hope it keeps it up. We re settled in now I borrowed a generator with electric starter from a friend, I have one, but it is a pull type start and my back is completely out now, I couldn't evenstart it. My son is At m Millsapps college in Jackson but I didn't want him on the highway with all of these idiots. We can run frig, freezer and some fans when, not if, the power goes out. If you guys could say a few prayers for us and this storm, it would be appreciated.

Don't you think that's just a bit harsh? These guys were just through katrina 3 years ago and many of them have just recently got their homes fixed from the last one. Leave and then what? Wait a week or more after the storm passes before you are allowed back in the area? And then there's the risk of having your home ransacked while you're gone. Hard to say what I'd do in the same situation, since I'm not in their shoes. But it's their decision, and whatever they decide to do may not deserve your support, but neither should it deserve your criticism. SCI Life Member DSC Life Member

It is not nice to fool Mother Nature... My theory, if I lived in the N.O., might be... If my house was not under water durring the last hurricane, then I might stay.... and protect what I own.... Rusty, That may be the conventional wisdom, but there are differeing views of what people view as "life threatening" situations. Some folks think nothing about traveling halfway around the world to get within 5 paces of a bull elephant that could crush them like a bug. Others would view that as absolute folly. These guys in LA go through this drill at least once every year, and have a pretty good idea of when to bug out. If this storm was a truly catostrophic Category 5 Hurricane bearing directly down on them, their actions would probably have been different. As it stands, news crews were roaming the streets as well as police, fire and national guard personnel. If property is not worth dying for, a job sure as hell isn't. And the fact that these personnel were not pulled back until the storm passed is something to consider. Like I said, whatever decision the make may not deserve your support, but neither should it deserve your criticism. SCI Life Member DSC Life Member

Got lucky this time. Only Cat 1 with 85mph winds by the time it got here. The eye passed just north of us. Lost some limbs out of oak trees and lots of debris but didn't even lose electricity. We are getting good at this crap. My fishing camp on the coast probably didn't fare so well. gi got the worst of it, they got 110 sustained winds. Mike70560 could have gotten some bad stuff also. I called Lafayette several times yester day to let family know what was happening, because they didn't have electricity, so no TV, and were in the dark(litterly), and had no way of knowing what was happening past their windows. Many there are still out of power, and My aunt is cooking as we speak to save the meat that thawed out, because of the lack of power. Some of the family came to Lafayette, to ride it out, and they are from Bayou Tegue, and when they go home, they had no power, but no real damage other than to trees. They had just rebuilt from Katrina, so that was good news. Houma cought hell, and I wounder about gi, hope he and his family are OK. This turned out much better than last time, because the new governer of LA activated the National Guard days before the storm hit, and got Nagen off his butt to get busses started takeing people out before the storm, exactly what Blanco should have done for Katrina! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Hi Guys Every thing fine on the home front no damage at all. I lost power 9am Monday. I got the generator running and have one nice cool room and fredge working. I talked gi he is just fine. just a little roof damage. Kim R did bug out but is back this am. Things were better here. No problems with his home. Got to love Bobby Jindal, this guys on the ball. Paul this is not my first time to the dance. I did not have a drop of water on the street for Katrinia. My wife works for the Corps of Engeniers we know what kind of shape the levees or in. We bought this house because it is on the highest land in the parish. When I could not get away 2 days before the evac I choose to stay because things were so badly run last time. I choose to stay because of the bullshit that went on last time. Cops kicking in doors and stealing gun collections. searching cars as they leave town and takeing guns and cash over $5000.00. I choose to stay because I got a real case of the red ass about our rights being stomped into the ground. It was no safer on the road last time , my wife got out to block a ford falcon load with some of New Orleans finest porch monkeys from breaking into the front of the gas line ,they acted as if they were going to run her over. They behaved once they got to look at the business end my riot gun, they don't know how close they came. Paul you running your mouth about any of us staying, is as off base as any of us questioning why a young man as your self with a family to raise would spend big bucks on double rifles instead of putting it away. Its kind of a personal choice, you would not care for someone questioning your logic. Thanks again for all the well wish and concern fom GI. KIM R. and my self. 577 Nitro Express, there is no rock star syndrome, it is just a matter of protecting what is yours. I evacuated for the first time in my life for Katrina, it was an exceptionally strong Hurricane, a cat 5. I was not worried about the rising water where I live, but I was worried about the wind from a cat 5 storm. I evacuated, went to Birmingham, Alabama and spent 3 nights in a hotel. and then went back towards New Orleans, the interstate highways were impossible to navigate with the trees and debris all over.. I was building houses in Houma, La. about 60 miles from New Orleans, I had several houses that were 99% complete, we went by back roads to Houma, neighbors brought us air mattresses, pillows, etc. It was 3 weeks before we went to our home 60 miles away. I had to sneak in on back streets to get there as early as I did. I pulled into the subdivision, gated subdivision, English Turn, there were no guards there and the gates were open. Pulled up to my driveway and started taking things, clothes, pots pans, etc. While we were doing this, two savages pulled up in a car, the rims on the car were worth 4 x what the car was worth. I had my 45 on my belt covered with my shirt, I uncovered the pistol. We had a staredown for about 2 minutes and then they decided to leave. We could not stay because there was no power, no food, etc. When we have a hurricane, I evaluate the strength of the storm, the movement of the storm and take an educated guess of the tides versus where we are. I will normally stay for a cat 3 storm and start thinking hard for a cat 4. The storm we just had, had about 100 to 110mph winds when it hit Houma, I had several shingles missing. If I lived closer to the Gulf of Mexico, it would drastically change my evacuation. guidelines. You can't always listen to what the media says about anything. If we did, we would have the media's rock star for a president. I don't really think that is going to happen. I enjoy my freedom and my firearms and want to keep both.
