Knowing that most of you own much more expensive double rifles I'm sure you sigh when you see another thread about the Pedersoli Kodiak IV.

But I love the look of these rifles. Exactly how well made are they? Are they worth the 4k asking price?

I'm thinking of converting a .45-70 model to .450 NE.

For the new asking price you might be able to find something else that is hammerless. If you get lucky and find a nice used one it should save you a bit. PWN375 here has (or had) a 45-70 with shotgun barrels and case for sale. Most of the guys on here who have or had them seem to be happy. I have seen one or two others say they were not pleased.

I like mine (in 9.3x74R) but at the new price I would have held out and looked for a used Merkel or something similar.

Edited: I am not aware of any successful conversion of any other make of 45-70 double to a Nitro Express round.

$4k is too much to spend . I got mine for less than 1/2 of that. Pedersoli are well built rifles I shoot cowboy action shooting and have owned several different Pedersoli models.
I have a kodiak in 45/70 I like it alot. I have the brass and dies to convert mine to 450ne#2 but Im not sure I can bring myself to chance screwing it up! It shoots great! 45/70 is a great round for north america and if I went back to Africa for DG Id use my 458wm or the 600ok.

EKG:

There is a thread in this forum talking about some of us here on AR doing a group buy of Chapuis DRs in 9.3X74R.

Initial figures being thrown around are prices in the upper $4ks.

Just a thought for you to consider.

I remember reading in a magazine that someone took one of these fine doubles on a safari and took a cape buffalo with a Garrett Sledgehammer. I don't own one, and believe me I've thought long and hard more than a few times about putting down some money for one. I think they're amazing rifles.

You can do better for the money IMO. If they would get rid of those hammers then maybe they would be more useful. My first Double was a Pedersoli, back when they first came out. I have a lot of fun with it but it didn't take me long to upgrade. Good luck.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! I bought one a few years ago and had it re-chambered to 458 RCBS. It shoots great I took a nice kudu at around 90 yds. and a great impala at over 100yds. I just booked my elephant hunt for Nov of 2006 and I will have my Kodiak with me.

Isn't this rifle supposed to be a close replica of a Colt (.45/70) double rifle from the 19th century, which Pedersoli allegedly used as a model? If so, that would explain the retention of the outside hammers.....

Yeah, it's a replica of the Colt. These were a good buy back when they were under $2K. At $4k, they're grossly overpriced. IIRC, Champlin quoted $4400 for the Chapuis UGEX 9.3 in the group buy thread. The ribs of the Pedersoli are hard soldered, so if you convert, and need to reregulate, you're SOL.

I have one of the Pedersoli doubles in 45-70 with the exposed hammers that I bought at Cabela's when they were selling them at like $2499. and change. I really like it and have shot one deer and a couple of Javelina with it. I do wish though that I would have waited and bought one in 9.3x74 while they were selling those. I have tried 385 grain cast bullets and reloads using the 405 grain Remington Core-Loct and my rifle seems to like the 405 grain bullet better. I have some 425 grain cast and some 535 grain cast that I am going to try.

There's a Trail Guns Armory 45-70 Pedersoli on GunBroker: 2500.00 with no bidders. This is an earlier model than the Kodiak, but very similar.
