I like the Boyt cases ... but (as a post further down indicates) I have not done any airline travel with them.

They work great in a car, truck or ATV.

To go inside a hard case?

I have both the Cabelas (made boyt and identical except for the nylon zipper rather than brass which I prefer) and the SKB. The cabelas / boyt is more traditional and the skb is better protection. Either works well

Yes, to go inside a Tuff-Pac along with another scoped rifle that will also be in a soft case. I already have a take down America case for it, but I'm pretty sure it would "destroy" the other rifle in the soft-case, plus it weighs quite a bit.

Any of those cases above sound like a good idea inside of a Tuff-pac. I agree I would not put that Americase in with a soft case. What's inside the soft would not survive!

One more thought. The first time I went to africa, I took my double in the takedown case in the tuff-pak along with a bolt rifle. When I got there, I wished that I had two long soft cases since the takedown was useless on a day to day basis. Next time I just took the double in a long case in the tuff-pak

I use the BOYT canvas/cotton cases locally, but have found that on safari that they do not protect the rifle enough to prevent finish wear while bouncing in the gun racks.

A heavy leather case by Bud Shaul or Dick Murray would be my reccomendation. They are pricey, but what double rifle isn't?

In the past I've taken Hunter canvas and leather long cases. They've protected my rifles in the gun racks nicely and are "reasonably" priced.

I do like the idea of taking the DR broken down so that the wrist is less at risk. Am thinkin' I'll take the two Hunters ... one with a bolt rifle in it, and the other empty ... and a Boyt takedown case with a DR in it. All inside the TuffPack.

Also a good plan. But ....

I know the baggage gorillas can be pretty abusive but when inside a padded case inside a TuffPak I just cannot imagine how one could break a stock on a double rifle. Maybe the anecdote about breaking that wrist was due to a weak or cracked wrist before the gun was packed away.

When you consider the abuse (stress) a stock takes from shooting the rifle, I just can't see dropping a TuffPAk as anywhere near as bad.

I try not to go ballistic based upon an anecdote. Smiler

Most of my PHs have a bunch of soft cases around, if not I leave them one or two for just that reason, so you might check on that..

Don't rely on this.
On both of my African trips last year, I was wishing I had brought a soft case myself.

Your gun is assembled while hunting, So a long Heavy leather case soft is what I use while hunting. On traveling air i ship assembled. People who hunt from trucks have gun racks and they can be rough on doubles. So it is usually in my hands or in the case laying flat. Guys with new doubles in the field are always fun because everyone is more worried about the rifle or spending time breaking the rifle down over and over to put back in the mutton leg at the end of the day or when traveling. BUT then I do use a canvas break down runnin around town.

This is not a take-down case but it is a bit different than 90% of them out there. Made specifically for double rifles from Cape Buffalo with a rectangular cup in the tip so the barrels do not want to twist in the case with a stock flap to keep it put www.sportwc.com

Last year based on the recommendations of people here I purchased a Boyts canvas case for my Chapuis and I could not be happier with it. Doubles as a great soft case to carry the rifle in the box on my ATV as well. But for shipping or airline travel it still would need to go inside a hard case.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

The Boyt works very well in a tuf-pak. Since my bolt gun is synthetic/utilitarian I use that long case in the gun rack. The takedown case leaves a bit of extra room for boots/gear in the tuf-pak.
