Guys:

I've been calling around to some ranches in Texas, looking for a place to do the next DRSS weekend hunt. As of right now, the place that is giving us the best bang for the buck is Camp Cooley, where the DRSS hunted in the past.

Camp Cooley is located in Franklin, Texas, almost smack dab in the middle between Dallas and Houston.

Now, this thread ISN'T for booking the weekend, this is for me to present the details of the offer to everyone and see how many people would actually be interested in the hunt.

The hunt weekend would start on Friday morning (check-in) and departure would be around lunchtime on Sunday.

It would happen sometime in August - Hot, you bet your butt it is, but so is hunting in Africa.

TARGET DATE OF AUGUST 18 to 20 (But flexible) Alen says there is nothing booked in August at this point.

The POC at Camp Cooley, Alen, said there are a lot of hogs on the property, but can't guarantee that everyone will get one.

The cost of the weekend hunt, including lodging, would be $300.00/person. If you harvest a hog, no matter what size, it would be $50/hog; with a special of "shoot three, only pay for two" - so basically shoot up to three hogs for $100.00. I am awaiting to see if there are other charges, such as game prep, etc.

The lodge has accomodations (bunk beds) to sleep up to 12 people. If people had air mattresses, we could accomodate more people. If more than 12 people want to attend, and if someone has a camper or trailer, we can park that next to the lodge so everyone can be together.

We would bring our own food and beverages. The lodge has a kitchen for us to cook stuff. Since we will all have cars, we may want to go out to dinner one (or more) of the nights.

If the past is any indicator, we'll spend the weekend hunting, shooting, eating, drinking and lying ;-) Alen said they don't have a range, but can take us to a place on the 11,000 acres where we can all shoot - that, I must say, is the highlight of the weekend. Seeing so many doubles and being able to handle and shoot them is just AWESOME.

So, right now I would like people to respond who think this is something that they would like to do. It's rather inexpensive for a GREAT weekend with some of the greatest guys you'll ever meet.

If my hunch is correct, I think that there will be a lot of people interested. So, if you are interested, and you have a camper or trailer, I would like to know that.

As I get more information, I'll post it here!

Count me in.
I should have my 450/400 double back from JJ with a Schmidt und Bender 1.1-4x24, fitted in claw mounts.

We will give it a test and ya'll will see just how much better a scoped double is for an all-round hunting gun. Big Grin

Also there is exotic game there as well. I assume you could hunt some of them too.
$ of us have taken a cow eland. The meat was very good.
They recover the animals immediately and get them into a walk in cooler.

Now here is the thing - who have a camper or trailer? I ask because the bunk house/lodge at Camp Cooley has beds for 12 people. However, there is a living room area and couch. I have a blow-up mattress that I can bring to accomodate another person. But, if we have a trailer or camper, we can have sleeping places for a few more guys.

577,

You know I am interested. However, my 14 year old daughter and I will be bear hunting in NM from August 18-23. Hot and muggy won't do justice to what that part of Texas is going to be like in August.

I have a place near Tulsa that will house and feed all of us plus allow one hog each for about 450.00/person. Beautiful rolling hills and a nice new lodge, plus a good assortment of exotics and trout fishing.

If the proposed date of August 18 to 20 doesn't work, and doing it earlier in the month would be better, we are flexible.

I just picked a date as a starting point.

Perry, would earlier in the month work for you? Say August 4 to 6?

Guys:

Perry (PWN375) posted a link to Sycamore Springs Ranch.

Seeing the amazing response for another DRSS hunt weekend, it is clear that we are quickly running out of room for the people to stay.

At Perry recommendation, I took a look at the ranch he recommended. Now, it's located in Oklahoma, outside of Tulsa, but the facilities look amazing. They offer boar hunting amont other exotics:

http://www.sycamorespringsranch.net/lo/group_photos.html

What are people's opinion about me contacting this location and seeing what kind of deal they would extend to our group? Would people actually be intereted in going here, or is it too far away from the Texas area originally posted on Camp Cooley?

Please let me know what you would like to do and I will do the coordination.

Paul,

Thanks for being point man on this.

I would love to come, but may not be able to get a kitchen pass as I leave for a three week African hunt on Aug 28. I may be able to come for one night. I will let you know once you set your plans. Sounds like a great time.

UPDATE

I just spoke with Alen at Camp Cooley. If we, as a group, decide to go there, and if we have someone bring a camper or something, we will NOT be able to park it directly next to the lodge, but WILL be able to park it near the lake, not far away.

Also, if someone wants to attend, and there isn't enough room to sleep at the lodge, there is a motel about 10 minutes away that we can use. Alen said if someone were to go that route, it would be $200 for the weekend (Not $300) plus the cost for hogs.

Also, if we go there, Alen would need a $150 deposit form each person attending.

Doug, thanks for the kind words. I really want to do another hunt with all of these GREAT people...

Guys:

I am so pleased to see so much interest in this weekend hunt/shoot. I can't stress enough how much fun it is!

Inregards to the other location in Oklahoma, I know it's further away for the people in Texas, BUT, the accomodations WILL NOT be any issue! We can have as many people as we want without worrying about finding places for people to sleep.

I have messages into Sycamore Springs, requesting information and asking what kind of deal they would offer us. I will post detail when I get them.

AKrange, I know you'd rather shoot your own double on this hunt, but don't let that stop you if you want to come along, there will be pleanty of double rifles there to shoot. You can certainly hunt with one of mine! I like the Oklahoma place as well, but either it or Camp Cooley, will do for me, if I'm well from my little set back! Kinda been wanting to hunt a foreign country anyway! clap

Do I have to have a passport to cross the Oklahoma line? Confused Got to prepare for these things you know! beer

If people could do a sound off as to what dates they would like, it would make this easier...

So, what do ya'll have to say? When is best for you?

I heard that statement!!!!
The one thing bad about hot weather, besides being hot as hell here in Texas is, for hog hunting is they become intirely nocturnal, and bed up in Yopon in the daytime. Today May 18th it is allready 92 deg at 10:00am. Something to think about. Confused

One possibility is a range day this summer (we did this a few years ago, which is how I met Rusty, Mark, Tony, etc) and then a hunt in the fall when things have cooled down a bit. I hate to even think of fleas & ticks on an August hog in 100 heat.
