Before I have the trigger pull changed on a Merkel 375 DR I'm gathering opinions and, hopefully, authorities. The trigger pull is very heavy, 7.5 on the front and off my 8# scale on the back. My double shotguns are all 3-4 pounds but I suspect a double rifle should not be that light. But what should it be?

3 - 4 lbs is fine IF that is what YOU are used to. I have had all my hunting DR's where easily done, set to the same trigger pull weight. These being 3 - 3.5 lbs for the front and 4 - 4.5 lbs for the rear. But that is me and it suits me fine.

I do the same with both rifles and shotgun. But if your very good gunsmith (the only one who ought to be working on any double rifle) can't get there easily while leaving plenty of "dent" or sear contact, a clean, crisp pull can hide a lot of weight and can be shot darn well. You should talk to JJ about that. He recently told a customer of mine that the Merkels will "wear in" a bit on trigger pull, and that they should be shot quite a bit before any adjustments are made.

Give Jack Huntington a call up in northern Ca. 530-268-6877. He's done quite a few Merkel triggers. A crisp 3-4 lbs is no problem.
