Does anyone have recommendations or experience which soft points would actually be the better hunting bullet? Thanks

Maybe you can tell us what cartridge and what game.... As to "softs"....I'm an A-Frame type of guy... It was under my post, sorry I didn't make it clear. 450/400 3" for eland, wild, kudu, waterbuck size game. 400 grain Hornady DGX soft points vs Woodleigh 400 softs. I don't have any experience on how either preform "in the meat". Both shoot very well in my rifle!

Here are two tests that you can compare the DGX to the Woodleigh. It is noted that the top test was only newspaper. The DGX really out-penetrated the Woodleigh. In the test with the Hardy Board and wood penetration was about the same. Woodleigh retained more weight and mushroomed better. These are the only test I did with my 450-400. I would use either on any of the game you mentioned. Bullets two and three are the DGX.

Hornady DGX big animals and full penetration from all directions. Mike

Hornady's are steel jacketed softs. As such I wouldn't expect them to expand, at least not as much as the Woodleighs. For what you are after, I'd use the Woodies. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. That's the info I was looking for! Hopefully, I get to dig out a bullet to see how it preformed. Thanks guys!!!

As has been mentioned, you are comparing 2 differnt bullets so of course one will out penetrate the other. That doesn't mean the Hornady is better than the Woodleigh - in fact, looking at how the DGX performs, it is acting more like a solid than a SN. Same as the Nosler Partition bullets always out penetrate others because all you have left is a little buttom of metal, no mushroom to pull it up. On the other hand, the mushroomed Woodleigh's will give a huge wound channel that generally stays open and bleeds because of the rough edges to it. Compare apples with apples so you get some meaningful result. And in any case, I've never had a lack of penetration in Woodleigh SN's or at least not enough that the animal didn't do what was expected - ie Die !!!

I tried to remain objective in the reporting, I know how you Aussie's get upset about Woodleigh Do not worry I will shoot some of those water buffalo one day and as promised I will use Woodleigh, even though it may be the Hydro's.

I know it’s not the same caliber… While in SA I shoot an eland off hand with a 470 NE DGX 500 grain. Clean thru… the exit hole was the size of a half dollar. NRA Member SCI Member & DSC Member Double Rifle Shooter's Society So. Cal. Chapter

sevenmagltd you didn't mention whether a double rifle or a single shot, I have both in 450/400 3" NE. I shoot woodleighs and hornadys for practice, my DR likes the woodies better the Ruger #1 doesn't care. For serious hunting with either rifle, I like the North Forks best both soft and solid as well as the Swift A-Frame which is a special order ited directly from Swift as they swage down a 416 bullet to 411. The chanaluer winds up in the wrong place so if you need to crimp, get a Lee Factory Crimp die. Also special order from Lee but worth the money. Shot a big roan antelope last August with a Woodleigh soft nose, distance 110 meters, bullet recovered just under the skin on the off side. . Big fellow went 40 yards, frog hopping with a center heart shot. Hope this helps, Good Hunting and Shooting. Tetonka DRSS

Here's a post about my experience using the woodleigh's on plains game. http://forums.accuratereloadin...=861109788#861109788 I'd be inclined to use the Hornady on big stuff inless Woodleigh has come out with a .411 protected point. Bob

shooting a Jeffery double I picked up last month. Rifle shoots the woodies and Hornady's ext. well. I didn't know which bullet would be better on the real thing. All advice appreciated.

Why a Protected Point in a Double. It's not going to suffer from damage plus I would like it to be going faster if a PP ? I would use the RN SN Woodleigh as I know they have and will work.

500N The rumor on AR has been the 400 grain 410/411 bullets from Woodleigh are a little soft for buffalo. Have you seen this in the water buffalo you have shot?

No, but I know where you are coming from and yes, I can see why people say it sometimes. Everyone has different views of what is and isn't a good bullet and how much expansion verses penetration they get - and there is a trade off sometimes. Hell, if I pushed them (Woodleigh SN), they expand more and pull up faster so in some situations you get less penetration but overall, they work fine for me, always open up, always penetrate, always kill - and have done for years. You get some ugly looking recoveries sometimes but the fact is, I got the recovery because it killed the animal and if the path is traced back, then you can see why it looks so ugly (Spine shots being very hard and different angles). The reason I made my comment above was because of what game sevenmagltd stated and Buff wasn't listed. His post is below. " " Also, IMHO, PP's need a bit more velocity to open up and not sure how he will do that out of a Jeffrey DR so I would stick with the RN SN. If the Woodleigh RN SN can't kill "eland, wild, kudu, waterbuck size game", maybe we should give up hunting !!!! LOL .

We know your little water buffalo are about as tough as a waterbuck, that is why I asked. I would take the Woodleighs before the DGX especially for the game listed.

Likewise, I'd have no problem using the woodleigh for large plains game. It's hard to fathom that either bullet would not be successful. If I felt I needed some extra penetration on a shot, I'd use the Hornady. Both are very accurate in my double. Bob
